You want half poo and half straw by volume to get a 30:1 ratio. You may actually have too much straw in that mix (hard to say since it is already partially composted, but most stables are mucked out before the poo is in equal amounts to the bedding). I would wet it down and see if it heats back up, it it doesn't I would add more nitrogen in whatever form you can get for free.

if you have a heavy soil like clay, just be aware that horse tends to tighten the soil. So if you have a heavy soil, use it sparingly. More other stuff (more that 75%) and less horse (less than 25%) in your pile so that the effects of the horse are buffered and it won't tighten the soil. Also let it age/mellow a little longer.
If you have sandy soil like I do, horse is great. Let it tighten the soil all it can! Use lots!

paulaw - I will probably do just that. Moisten and see if it heats up. I have many pounds of ucg that I can add in the event that it doesn't get hot. I also just bought a Deere 318 garden tractor w/a power bagger and can now collect all the grass clippings I want. Grass gets my piles really cookin'. I actually enjoy mowing the yard now.

softmentor - My soil is a sand/loam. Though I haven't actually acquired the soil that I will use in my raised beds. I have yet to find some really nice topsoil in bulk and am leery of the bagged stuff at the big box stores. Unfortunately, the last 10 yards of topsoil that I had delivered had too many rocks, glass chards, nails and other debris to use for anything but fill. Luckily I needed a lot of fill dirt.

Now I know some people are high on manures...and horse manure --the higher the better -- is just fine and dandy.
But, when we think about it...manure in such hot form, is not to the liking of plants. I'd say...all plants.
If it were, then I think the fertilizer companies would be selling it more openly as just such... horse manure.

From all reports I've read about the subject, they all suggest a more reasonable time interval between the time it exits its source to the time it goes back into the ground to effect what it can do. A year is commonly the time interval from fresh to usable.
If such goes into a compost pile, then such interval should be adhered to. Better to treat a new pile, then add to the old.

A poster a while back suggested that since she has many horses and wished to partake the valuable resource they offer, gave such freshness to her vegetable garden.
Such vegetables then made their way to the dinner table.

She got very antagonistic when I suggested she inform her guests, before they sit down, what was added to the carrots and broccoli put before them.
Her adamant statement that she has been eating such food for the past many years and she hasn't had any problems, just made up her mind that her horses gave the good stuff.
And what's good enough for her, is good enough for anybody who sits at her table.

Now everybody knows that rabbit poo is good enough to add to the plants straight away.
But, whether it is good enough to top the potatoes in place of a spread.....
well, that's cutting the cheese the wrong way.

If that were my horse poo, I would spread it on my planting beds this weekend. Hmmmm..in fact, I AM going to spread very similar horse poo this weekend!

The straw (it's probably actually hay) will rot in no time flat. Pine shavings can take a surprisingly long time to rot completely but, IME, they go faster when in direct contact with the soil. At my old barn, the horses were bedded in pine and there was a steaming manure mountain at the back. The shavings weren't thoroughly rotted even after a year in heat so high you could feel it through your boots - but they didn't last long in the garden.

I would compost the horse manure just like anything else. I don't see why it needs to sit for an entire year, just because it's p-o-o-p. If someone uses commercial fertilizers, should they tell their guests that their food was grown with petroleum?

If the manure and hay are composted, but the shavings have not broken down yet, it would be a good mulch.

How much additional high Carbon material to add depends on a number of things and is not an easy question to answer. What you will need to do is just start mixing and see how things work. I would, as I always do, is mix 3 parts of vegetative waste with 1 part of this manure, making sure the material is just moist and not soaking wet.

That poo looks pretty well composted to me. Are you in florida? If so, compost happens pretty fast here. I would probably be spreading that compost on beds that I was preparing for winter planting and use some of it to help jump start your next compost pile. Then again, I live a bit dangerously. If you think manure is fresh, you want a year between when it is spread on a field to when you are harvesting edible ground contact crops. I think a year in a compost bin plus whatever time it was windrowed plus time between spreading the compost on the garden to when the crops might be planted/harvested might be overkill.

If you are in central Florida, I would suggest that perhaps you want some mushroom compost for your raised beds. There is a mushroom farm here in central FL that will load you up (nice big trailer load) for about $5. You bring the truck or trailer. It is pretty good stuff in my opnion (at least most of my plants seem to be liking it.) It is horse manure composted with straw and some additives. They put it into the buildings and steam sterilize it before growing their mushrooms. After growing the mushrooms, they steam sterilize it again then haul it out of the building. It is still quite recognizable as horse manure mixed with straw but it's been sterilized so I'm not worried about e. coli. It sticks to your shoes like manure too and makes a great mulch and moisture holding additive to our sandy soil.

Tclynx - Yep... Florida native here. I'm not exactly sure how old the manure is. She had a long windrow and I just kinda started digging into the most accessible area for my lil loader tractor. It still smells a little. I was hoping to hot compost it, turn a few times and add it to my vegetable garden for this upcoming fall season. I have about 3 yards of nearly completed compost but I'm still really low on soil for all my new raised beds. Would it be safe enough to use after hot composting for the next month with frequent turnings?

I considered picking up some compost from monterey mushroom but after reading all the posts here on GW about possible larvacides and pesticides used in production I am now hesitant. Do you know if they use such chemicals? I am pretty well read on basic mushroom culture and have only recently heard of the use of these "cides". I really figured proper sterile procedure would eliminate the need for these products. Especially at a large scale facility.
