swingset over septic leach field?
Comments (3)I don't think it's so much an issue of contamination from the field (unless there is a failure) as it is a question of whether the playset will affect the field. Installers I've talked to say nothing should be on top of the field that will cause compaction, such as structures and vehicles. It will probably be worth calling a couple of septic companies and asking if there would be a problem building the size set you want....See MoreSeptic / Leach Field situation
Comments (1)If this is coming from your leech field you have to renew the field. A properly operating leech field will not smell or deposit liquid effluent on the ground. Draining the septic tank doesn't do anything, they only operate when they are full which only takes a week or less of operation....See Moreadvice on old septic & leach field
Comments (4)First, if there is a lot of large debris in there they may not be able to pump it out. And second, if you ever go to sell the place, it would need to be fixed properly before selling (especially if someone needs to get a loan which requires an inspection). It's better to fix it right. It currently sounds like a health and safety hazard. Do it while the weather is decent. I'm not sure what zone you're in, but if the ground freezes you may not be able to address the problem. If you hire someone to put in a new tank they may need to do a percolation test to determine the absorption rate of the soil. You could be talking thousands of dollars (for removal, new tank, install, etc.) so do some homework. We had a septic tank collapse on us. We didn't really notice it, except when all the kids came home to visit we had a slight back-up through the basement floor drain in storage room. Went outside to find a soggy mess on top of the tank location and a slight indent. The septic guys came the same day to tear out the old tank and install the new. It was during the first gentle snow of the winter season....See MoreHeavy equipment driven over septic leach field -- yipes!
Comments (4)I just talked to the on-site project manager. He said that the machine used was a "tracker" with tank-like treads instead of tires and thus it was safe to drive over the leach field. I responded that whether it was safe or not, I had told them multiple times I did not want trucks on the leach field wen there is another route to the fill area that would have avoided the leach field completely. He said that his worker drove over the leach field after being told not to do so. kEnglish is not the first language of that employee so maybe he didn't understand the instructions. I also expressed concern about the damage to the lawn. It took years to get a lawn established in that part of the yard because there are large active dogs in the family and the yard is in semi-shade. A lawn existed, though, and now that area has now been completely churned into bare earth by the tracker because they did the work when the ground was very wet. It's really difficult to start a new lawn in that situation, particularly when the area is in semi-shade. I don't think putting down seed will do the trick, and compacting the top layer of soil with a tracker is going to make it harder. It's clear they intend to do something about the lawn, but I don't think that throwing down seed will cut it. I don't know if I should ask for them to pay to test the septic system to check that there really is no damage. I don't even know what type of tests are used. Does using a tracker really make it completely safe for them to drive over the leach field?...See MoreKimmsr
