Tree ID in Los Angeles...

Hey Everyone,

New poster here. I just purchsed an amazing house in Mt. Washington, a neighborhood in Los Angeles (right by downtown LA, South Pasadena). It is like a lovely tree house and I am so thrilled to be able to play in the gardens.

These two trees seem to need some help. The first is in the back yard of the main house. Please forgive the pictures as they are on an iphone and it was super sunny. What concerns me is that half the tree looks almost dead. I don't know how to help it as I haven't a clue what it is.

The other tree is seemingly a bit happier. Again not a clue what it is....or how to take care of it. Any ideas on either front would be so appreciated. BTW if it helps at all there is massive bougainvillea and a huge lemon tree behind the tree below just so people aren't confused as to what I am trying to ID.

Looks like Ficus carica.

Thanks so much parker25mv! Looks like we're both on the same page. I'm not planning on planting them in the ground, and I agree that they're too dominant in LA right now. When I was trying to find a suitable screen plant I read through all of the ficus discussion on here and decided against them. Then these fell into my lap, which opens up budget for native CA plants elsewhere so I'm trying to make lemonade. I'll leave them in the half-barrels, but I'm also open to any suggestions to make them healthier. Root pruning has been suggested above, which I'm looking into now. Thanks!

Syn means synonymous. Often the naming of plants is difficult to keep track of: both naming priority based on who names the plant first, as well as taxonomic changes when a genus is lumped or divided can influence the name and result in synonymy. Other factors also, but it's my understanding that these are common reasons.

I think you've got it with the fishbone fern :-) Not too many ferns form a groundcover and the Nephrolepis is the only one I can think of that matches both the visuals and the description of the growing conditions.

Japanese honeysuckle, and the cultivars, are the most widely grown landscape honeysuckles in SoCal. Probably the giant (L. hildebrandiana) is next, and quite a bit down the chart. But the giant is generally is not used as a groundcover here; usually placed as a climbing vine. Love that Japanese honeysuckle, or don't put it in the ground. They can be challenging to eradicate from the landscape here.

Way outside my climate experience but figs do tend to leaf out quite late and if unpruned to have a lot of bare branch length with leaves at the extremities. They might be seed sown trees and they look a bit crowded. Both could contribute to a straggly habit.
