Niche Gardens - anyone ever order from them?

I just placed an order - they had the very elusive white beautyberry I've been after for the past year! So excited to have found it.

They have a lot of very unusual plants you don't see just everywhere. Min. order is $40, but I didn't have any problem finding other things I'd like. Prices are higher than say, Bluestone or Santa Rosa, but again, lots of things you can't find elsewhere.

I had ordered one plant, Salvia Leucantha, that is really borderline for my area. I've heard that sometimes it does overwinter, sometimes not. Anyway, a rep emailed me this morning to caution me against planting it in the fall in my Zone. She had apparently done a little googling and had me pegged as either 6B or 7, depending on the source. She said I *may* get lucky if I planted in the spring, but it would definitely not survive if planted in the fall. Then I remembered having read that about Leucantha.

I thought that was really good customer service. :) I'm getting a Beautybush instead! Woot!

They get a good DG rating as well. I'll report back when I get my shipment. Just wondered if any of you had ever ordered from them.

I've been to Niche Gardens before. Their staff is knowledgeable, and they do carry some unusual plants, but they are kind of pricey.

But I guess it's worth the price if it's something rare that you've got to have. Around here Salvia Leucantha is fairly common, LARGE plants can be found at the big box stores for $5. Even in zone 7B it has not performed well for me, and the one plant that survived the winter never bloomed again!

Yeah, it was the white beautyberry that was driving my order. I have looked high and low for one of those!

I have never seen Salvia Leucantha in a nursery here. There is one specimen at our local Ag Center - that's where I fell in love with it. Well, even if it was just an annual I don't think I'd mind. They are show-stopping when in bloom!

That's too bad that you had trouble with them. I've been thinking about ordering from them myself. I've pretty much stopped ordering plants online unless its from Lilypons or Ewaterlily or a couple of other forum members that I know have wonderful plants. This year I've bought plants at one of two local nurseries that carry water plants. This year they cut back on the size of their marginal plants and they are potted in the 4 inch pots for $5.99 each. You can't beat that! They are nice plants for that price so I've bought a bunch of them from them this year. There was a thread on another forum recently where some folks were complaining about the size of plants they had received for their $$ from an online source. Many plant growers sell what they consider a "marketable size" plant for mail order which can tend to be pretty small. I've ordered from Aquatic Plant Depot and you get really small plants but everything I've ordered from them took off growing. I hope you can get a refund for your dead plants.

Palepinkrose, Please follow Maryl's advice and post feedback at Garden WatchDog. Some of the posts above seem to convey the idea that this MAY be a questionable operation. Based on my conversations with them, I'm more than willing to give Roses Inc Tulsa the benefit of the doubt, & think that the owners of this new nursery are serious in their determination to provide a quality product with quality service.

i ordered about $13 of seeds from them. i had to stop myself cause they had lots of nice things. the delivery was fast. i liked how the packaged some of the tiny seeds in little tubes. all of what i order was hardy annuals that i plan to sow in march.

I know this is an old post, but...it is one I found from trying to find feedback on this company. My son , placed a large $500 order with them in February for carnivorous plants to start a business with. Honestly, it was all he had , and here we sit, no plants. They were shipped out on the 17th of March, and it is now April 13th. There is no tracing the package via usps. Malasiana did email him to tell him they tracked the package somehow to a fish and wildlife person, gave us the guys' name and phone number, and although we have called twice, he has not returned a call. Malasiana claims he had a problem with their paperwork, and that in all their years of business they have never had this happen. So now what, my son is out $500 ? If the package arrives, we still have to pay customs on it, so that will be another $100 just to open to the box and see if everything is dead ? This is SO dissapointing, and I feel like they are ripping us off. We have nothing, and they have all of our money !

Never ordered from them because I live nearby, but I do buy from them about once a year, and only those plants that I can't find anywhere else. They are a bit pricey, but a good operation.

I've visited them and enjoyed the selection of some unusual plants. I also really liked the staff. My mom is from eastern NC and when she and one of the staff were discussing a particular plant they gave her one for free so that they could get some info from her as a "test" as to how it did in her garden. I thought it was great that a nursery was that interested in how plants perform in different areas of even the same state. I'm not surprised you got great service from them.
