Where can I find pictures of insect damage?

I walked out this morning to watch my last austin Graham Thomas bloom, and he bloomed....but only 1 of the 20 buds was undamaged and proper. The remainder is being eaten by something that specifically likes just the bloom and will eat half the bloom as it buds up so you can see the cross sectional area of the bloom. I thought it was just the squirrels being a little curious about the new roses at first as Pat Austin had a couple have the same problem near the base, but Graham Thomas is about 2.5ft tall right now and the buds up top have been getting munched on. Some of them so much so, that they have been eaten completely off the plant and are laying on the ground. I know there are a variety of insects that could do this, but I don't specifically know which one this is or have any specific experience with viewing the individual insect damage. For now, I just sprayed it with some very basic MG rose spray, but I might have to find something more effective to stop whatever it is from eating all my blooms on Graham Thomas.

If they are eating that much then you can see insect, maybe you will have to look at night underneath the leaves mostly.

I get this damage also. It may be that this insect, probably a small caterpillar, is eaten by a bird or wasp before it gets too far. I was lucky to have a family of chickadees in the rose garden birdhouse. The energetic parents collected small worms from plants continuously for 3 weeks.

Marc: I continue to believe that you are seeing bird damage on your apples. Insects use apples as hatcheries for their eggs and a comfortable living for their larvae until they are ready to pupate. Insects do not visit apples to feed; they are there to propagate their species. I know of no insect that can zoom in, take a chunk like that out of an apple, and make a clean getaway. The brown area under the damage is simply oxidation, which happens to any apple when the flesh is exposed to oxygen. Birds do this kind of thing all the time. Not in every orchard, or in every season, but they do it. Bagging apples is a chore, and I am happy for H-man that he does not have to bag in his climate, but here below the Mason/Dixon line we do it or we spray a lot. If you are losing up to 50% of your already thinned and selected apples, that is too heavy a price to pay. Bag those apples, and you will defeat the birds as well as the codling moth that is likely to show up later. Not to mention 90% reduction in sooty blotch and flyspeck. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

I'd recommend Rick Darke's book, Encyclopedia of Grasses. Full of great pictures from grass gardens, nurseries, botanical gardens, you name it. Information is outstanding as well. For pictures on the web, try some of the mail order grass suppliers... Santa Rosa Gardens High Country Gardens Joy Creek Bluestem Nursery They all have internet sites with lots of pictures of ornamental grasses.

It is interesting after taking a second look at the bloom. It seems to almost slice a small 1/4 inch incision on the base/side of the bloom, then eat it from the inside out. I have no idea what it might be or why it sometimes chooses to eat the entire stem so the bloom falls off or why it chooses to only eat half the bloom and leave the rest. It looks as if you took a bloom getting ready to open up and just cut it in half with a knife.

Katydids will slice buds cleanly, usually vertically. The nymphs (immatures) look like spindly green grasshoppers. They are hard to see. If you try to catch one, anticipate a leap forward and up.

However, they don't hollow out. There's a kind of sawfly larva that will hollow out buds, but I don't recall the sliced look. Also I have some large black ants that do this-- not sure whether they initiate the damage, but I think they do. These buds are sliced horizontally and then hollowed.

You could apply to the closed buds only an insecticide that is labelled for chewing insects (beetles and worms).
