Insect damage to apples....but I sprayed! (see photo)

I'm hoping you might be able to help me identify what insect damaged my apples--and when they attacked. More than half of my crop appears affected--small round depressions, usually one per apple. When the apple is cut open, there is a shallow brown area under the wound. I sprayed with Imidan and Captan on April 29--my first of the year, not counting dormant oil. Cherries and plums were at full shuck, apples were at petal fall. I was anxious to get the spray on the plums to avoid PC. To date I have not seen any damage to stone fruits--only apples.

Given that I sprayed the apples at petal fall, and shuck had not occurred, did I spray too early or too late? There were some rains a couple of days after I sprayed.
