Is hibiscus breaking on its own weight?

Last summer I bought a hardy hibiscus, not Rose of Sharon. I am talking about perennial hibiscus, Rose Mallow. I love this plant as it is not fussy at all and it blooms in mid-late July when things look tired.

It really grew well this year and was about 3 feet wide with TONS of buds. Then when my Husband was weeding, he came away with a third of the plant: it was broken off at the stem. I thought maybe rabbits had done it.

Yesterday he pulled off another broken branch. Of course I accused him of breaking it :-) but afterward I apologized and said maybe it was breaking on its own weight, the flowers are so large.

I don't think rabbits probably broke 2 branches: has this happened to anyone else?
