cover with tarp?
Comments (6)Don't let it touch.. In my greenhouse, plants that touch the plastic will get burn marks on very cold nights. 27F is really iffy. If you get lucky you may not have much damage at all, it may just thin the tree some. I think if your thinking of a material, try frost cloth. They sell it at WalMart now (at least here they do)... Its out in the gardening section. Cheaper then Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Dalen-HG25-Harvest-Guard-Cover/dp/B000HHQNBG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301349595&sr=8-1...See MoreCover raised beds with tarps to kill weeds?
Comments (5)Putting an impervious cover lie a tarp over the planting bed to smother those "weeds" will work but it will also limit air and water exchange that the Soil Food Web needs, along with organic material, to live. Limiting air exchange could cause the soil to become anaerobic which would have bad effects on what you grow there later. Better than a tarp, or plastic sheeting, would be newspaper or cardboard held in place with some organic (vegetative) material such as straw, shredded leaves, even grass clippings. The paper will do wat the tarp would do, prevent plants growing underneath from access to the sunlight they need to grow so they will die and will add organic matter to the soil and will also allow the soil to breath and get water. kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreWill covering a patio set with tarp ruin our wooden deck?
Comments (5)What material is used for the patio set? Most exterior patio pieces are designed for external weather. We have cushions for our chairs that are supposed to be able to be left out---but sitting on a wet cushion is a drag, so we take them in unless used. The tables/chairs are either aluminum or cast iron(both painted). Our patio is covered, but condensation/wind happens, so light cleaning is necessary about twice a year...See MoreHey, do you use a heating blanket to keep trees/plants warm?
Comments (1)I thought about doing that, before but electric blankets are labeled as shock hazzards when exposed to water. With condensing moisture on your tarp barrier, you should be wary just in case. I've used a small space heater with temp set at 50 and the fan circulating air that I put it under a trash can lid to shed condensation just in case. A blanket plus plastic/tarp is my normal heavy cold protection method, the blanket keeps freeze contact damage against the exterior plastic....See Moreceresone
