The issue is survivability of the fungal spores from plant through composting and then in the tea. There are so many variables, coupled with an unidentified pathogen, and uncertainty of whether the composted leaves were even infected, that I don't believe anyone can suggest with any certainty what the probability of spore survival in your situation will be. So, it's a crapshoot.

Reports of fungal spore destruction during composting of tomato vines infected with either late blight fungus (Phytophthora infestans) or early blight fungus (Alternaria solani) are varied. Spores of both can survive a year or more on infected plant tissue and in soil. Most reports indicate that spores associated with early blight is destroyed in hot thermophilic composting followed by adequate maturation. Spores associated with late blight, however, have been reported to survive composting. As for a compost extract or tea, I've not seen anything that indicates what impact the brewing process may have on spore survival for either.

If the composted leaves were disease and spore free, the risk would be probably non-existant. There have been a lot of tomato plant residues composted by many gardeners without problems following. The concern arise if there were spores present, either on the plant material or in any attendant soil that came with that material. If the plant materials that you composted were infected, there is a clear risk. But, I don't think with what you've provided anyone can gauge whether the risk is high or medium or low.

Thank for the response. I believe I need to clarify The compost extract was "brewing" at the time I put the tomato foliage into it. It was green....I had pruned some bottom leaves. Plant didn't have any spots at that time. Just a few aphids.Two Part question is since this is a water solution, would blight grow there even tho it is anaerobic. and If yes, How do I dispose of it with spreading the fungus

I doubt that a compost extract is a good culture for the proliferation and growth of either early or late blight fungi. For a definitive answer you would need to an answer from someone well versed in those fungi, their lifecycle, etc.

The concern I have is not about growth of the fungus, but on the potential survivability of any spores of the fungus that may have been present on the leaves through the brewing or extraction process. That the leaves were bottom leaves, closest to the soil and most subject to soil splash increases the concern for contamination. Again, I doubt anyone really knows and doubt it has been studied. But if the leaves were green and healthy when you clipped them, it is unlikely that they were contaminated much at all.

If the tomato plants were infected with the spores of either Early or Late Blight and your compost did not reach temperatures in the 135 to 150 degree range for several days, those disease spores would survive and could be in the liquid to contaminate more plants. While the spores do survive better on plant material they are known to survive in soils for years and have been found in seeds.

JIJACK - in a moment of better consciousness this morning (guess the coffee kicked in), I had a few thoughts. I doubt there is any risk IF your intent is to use that extract on soil. The fungal spores associated with whatever blight you experienced are already in your soil, where they will live for at least a year, and likely longer. Further, those spores can be airborne distributed - the wind will move them around. The problem comes when the spores land on plants that can be infected (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc.), then the plant can become infected when the spores germinate. For that reason preventive measures focus largely on avoiding soil splashing onto susceptible plants, and minimizing spore buildup in the immediate area by moving plants in successive years and destruction of infected plant material.

The fact that the leaves you added were healthy and showed no signs of infection when you pruned them suggests that there were few if any spores present at that time. The upshot is, I doubt you can do any harm by applying your extract to the soil, while avoiding direct contact with potentially susceptible plants. The spores are surely already in your garden soil, and probably have been well distributed to the immediate surrounding areas by airborne transmission. Your bigger issue will be in future plantings of susceptible plants.

Kimmser, I clarified the compost extract was already brewing when I put the foliage into it. It's not the compost, that's the culprit here.

Just to give a bigger picture...This garden is 6 mulched raised beds. I manured with well aged cow manure 30 days prior to planting. I mulched, I have no splash issue...BUT we have had more rain than sun since they were planted, and it's been rather humid. and earlier in the month I did use extract on the foliage of the Early Girl tomato. But I suspect TX is right the spores were already in the garden when I started. Thanks everyone
