feeling sorry for myself

this last sunday i was working on my greenhouse by myself. i was trying to close in one end of it by building a wall. apparently the nails i chose were to short and as i was squated down nailing in board number 3 (couldnt find a battery for the screw gun and was too impatient to wait for dh) when board number 2 a 10ft 2x4 came crashing down on my lower back. needless to say i could not walk for 3 days. i can now walk but i look like quasimodo. can't stand up straight.

i cannot get out and do my winter sowing which is driving me nuts. i've missed a week of work. i don't sit still as it is. i've looked at all 36 of my garden magazines so many times i'm ready to burn them. my kids are sick of helping me. whaaaaa!!!! i am just majorly feeling sorry for myself. i needed to vent. my daughter and i are alone for the weekend as dh and sons are camping in 8 ft of snow.

Tanya, by the time this cold front passes, which is forecast to be very dry after tomorrow, windy, and downright frigid...hopefully you'll be feeling more like yourself. I'm not sowing anything for the next 4 or 5 days here (I want moist and chilled, not dry and frozen) and I got a $50 seed order in todays mail - how's that for discipline.

Back pain is just about the worst. Stay warm and get healed quickly, your seeds can wait a bit.

Seedmama: My heart goes out to you. It brings back to me our experience with a similarly devastating ice-storm in 1997. Ours was after Christmas, January I think, but your post brought back to me the sound of branches of our particularly large maple crashing down on the house; large chunks of ice crashing on to the roof and ricocheting off on to the driveway; watching the explosions as transformers on the hydro poles went up in flames; and seeing the top of my choice flowering crab fall off into the driveway, just after I had moved the van. It was a nightmare, but we were safe, together, and had a fireplace and a gas barbeque, and those things brought us through. It was over two weeks before power was restored to everyone - we had itermittent power as the Hydro crews removed branches which fell on the power lines across our yard and I used those times to start meals which I could finish on the barbeque. It's amazing how creative we can become if we have to. So hang in there, and try to enjoy Christmas, and leave the cleanup until Spring. We had to because our weather continued to be bad, but it was amazing as soon as the weather began to warm up to see perfect strangers just arriving on your property, cutting up downed trees and stacking the wood for free, and clearing up branches stuck in trees, and downing those which did not straighten up after the ice melted. We all pitched in and helped each other and things went faster than we expected. Maybe your comunity will come together like ours did. But take your time and see what nature has presented: it may be nicer than you think and remember 'this too will pass'. You will feel down sometimes, and that's O.K., because it will pass. Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones and we'll look forward to seeing your new beds in 2008. Northerner.

i'm coping by giving up, it sounds like i'm not alone! i had given up earlier in the summer but finally in july i gave up on everything and it looks now like it was a great decision. we still haven't had rain, i would be crazy by now if i had tried to save everything. now that most of my more expensive/favorite plants are dead i don't seem to care as much. this spring i spent tons of money (as usual) planting all kinds of things and they all got fried, i could never get them established. i had to let them all die and become crispy. the last thing i tried to do was to go out and get a lettuce patch growing for autumn but by watering the lettuce to get it to grow i attracted deer to the yard and they have eaten it all, the deer will come right up to houses in a suburban neighborhood and eat when the drought is this bad. now my only projects that require water are a small 4x4 bed of evergreen bunching onion seeds that i have been watering, they don't seem to want to germinate though, and also a small patch also about 4x4 foot of corn that i am watering as an experiment to see how late in the year i could grow corn to maturity. oh and i planted a bed of kale as well, it too hasn't yet germinated but i expect it to. one of my few successes is a single rose that i grew from cutting this year, it was the only rose to live out of about 15 cuttings. this one rose i keep watering out in the vegetable garden and it is happy as a clam lol. my one bright spot! people not in the drought i know they must think right you people just should not give up like that all you have to do is go out and water everything, they just don't understand that you can't keep tender plants alive when the drought is killing TREES. this place is like a desert that doesn't know it is a desert yet, we just haven't had any rain.

Well I don't know how anyone could read that without shedding a few tears. Still have a lump in my throat thinking about it. We were watching the news tonight and it showed little ones getting what would probably be their only Christmas gift from some charity. There were tons of toys and each child got to pick one. The look on their little faces made me cry, too. Then a few minutes ago I saw this little boy on TV who was more than disappointed with all his presents throwing a fit and saying, "I didn't get poop for Christmas." What can I say?

Mojo, I get it, I'm packing now! It seems the more I pack, the messier the old place becomes! Books, after all, are neat and rectangular. I've taken 5 bags to the Library Book Sale donation so far, but have boxed up many times more for the move. Some I've schlepped up already. (It amazes the GC!) I've recycled all the old computer books, and those house design books people gave me when they knew I was building - you know, those useless house plans where frequently there are NO windows on at least one outer wall... I've brought up most of my clothing. With our current heat wave, I wish I'd left more short sleeved things down here! The only kitchen stuff still here (besides food) is the stuff that matches each other, since when the place does go on the market, this would be nice for staging. (We call the other stuff, "mutant-ware", and it is handy for camping... or getting a new residence started...) I did have to buy induction ready cookware, so the old rangetop cookware remains here. I'll be moving most of my current furniture. So most of that is staying here until I sell. I did buy a new IKEA sleeper sofa, as the cost of recovering the old one to fit into the new house would be prohibitive. I am also replacing the LAST of the old "college grad do whatcha can afford" presswood bookcases with finish-them-yourself pine book cases, and I bought a NEW office chair ($70, clearance from $200). I know this means my house won't really tie in together as House Beautiful, but it will be House Comfortable and Affordable. I've lived here since 1991. I do like this place, but hated both the kitchen (dysfunctional) and the driveway (steep, curvy, not winter-friendly). Most of the stress of moving is not from leaving here, though I will carry some good memories, but from just sorting through EVERYTHING! Indeed, I've already decided that a couple ceramic cats I brought up about a month ago will be donated to a fall auction held by a group I belong to. Nice, but... they just don't want to be in the new home. (There are some things I like well enough but don't feel the need to continue to house - I like them well enough to not wish to send them to Goodwill - which may well trash them, but rather find homes where they'll be appreciated.)

I am so sorry to hear that! I hope you heal quickly, but please just don't over-do it when you get back to life. Backs are not something to mess around with. I think your seeds will completely understand and wait patiently until you are able to tuck them into their dirt beds. When you do however, just be careful to not sing them a lullaby or give them a kiss goodnight in front of anyone or someone might buy you a white coat and take you for a ride to a nice padded room!

I'm sorry for you too. Just rest and go slow I'm sure your garden will be wonderful with what ever you can do later, after all its still early.

ya know tanya, we'll listen to whatever you want to talk about!! that's what we're here for! it's all part of winter sowing! think about it, there's parts of it we can't do for a while cuz of the weather, so we should be able to talk about that too! and there are the down side, like what happend to you! :'(( which i'm so praying you get better soon!!
this is just january, we still have febuary. don't stress it!! that's definately not gonna help the healing of your back ;')
you'll have a wonderfull garden! this we all know! :')) lots of love!! medo get better soon and HAPPY THOUGHTS!! ;'))

Ouch! Getting injured in the line of duty isn't off topic to me. We probably need a WS injury thread again, if nothing else, to serve as a warning to others. I hope you feel better soon.

My injuries are usually stupid and funny - yours sound serious. Take care my friend.

well, i've decided after watching so much hgtv and diy i should be able to decorate and design anything i want. i have to admit i enjoy watching "carter can" and "over my head" for obvious reasons. but, my dear son is going to bring in a 5 gallon bucket or 2 of potting mix to the kitchen so i can sow in here and then he can take them out for me. he's such a good young man. i've also got some shutters i can paint and put hooks and knobs on to make a coat rack for by the door. i was going to make a cornice box out of a bi-fold door for my sliding glass door but i'll have wait on that, thanks for all the pep talks. i never sit down so it's just been really hard. i've started reading harry potter books cuz i've read all of my own. i've got some great books on making concrete stepping stones and bird baths but again it makes me want to go outside. i've got cabin fever!!!!! i've only got to drive my new truck twice. well, i guess i will go organize all the new seeds i've recieved in the last few days. now there is some fun!!!

Tanya,I know this has got to be driving you crazy! You are such an active person it has got to be like torture for you!:O Well at least you have some help while healing,that will make a big difference! I hope that your back is better soon and that it doesnt cause you any problems in the furure! And by the way I love Carter Can ,probably for the same reasons you do!...lol..Thank you HGTV! :D
