Nursery told me I have unusual taste! :(

I walked around in the 100 degree heat with the nursery owner waiting for my new baby to grab me. I thought I would have to leave empty handed, that was til I saw Cinco de Mayo! Beautiful! Loved it!

He asked me what other roses I had. I said mostly bright yellows, corals, salmons, and mauves. He looked at me and told me that I have unusual taste! He said everyone asks for reds and whites or pale pinks...never the ones I had chosen. I said it was their loss! So, I picked up a Cinco de Mayo.

I have people stopping by house to tell me how beautiful the colors are. My new Camelots have been the show stopper! I pick my flowers by color first, fragrance second, and petal count last. Brighter the better!

The brighter the better for me. And I love Cinco de Mayo. It is such a great shape and color. I choose my roses for the bright color first. Shockwave, Rio Sambo, Redgold, cinnamon twist, gizmo, Disneyland, Playboy, pink lemonade, hot cocoa so far.

The usual response I get to coconut husk chips is "huh?" No one in my area that I've found so far has even heard of them but for one other fellow Citrus Forum member who lives here. He buys them from a supplier in Orlando and was kind enough to get me a bale last time. I'm using the recipe that Millet gave once and so far it works for me. Here is what I do. After properly pre-soaking and then pre-treating the CHC's with CaNO3 and MgSo4 during the last rinse I then blend my growing medium mixture usually one cubic foot at a time. I start with the basic mix of 4 parts CHC (1/4 or 1/2 inch chips or a mix of the two sizes) to one part peat moss and to this basic mixture I add the following ingredients per 1-cubic foot: .57-lbs. (258-gms) 23-4-8 one year slow release fertilizer. .48-lbs. (218-gms) Dolomite .08-lbs. ( 36-gms) Regular water soluble fertilizer w/o trace minerals. .08-lbs. ( 36-gms) STEM (Soluble Trace Element Mix) Blend entire mixture well. I then begin my regular fertilizer applications one month after transplanting the tree into the above medium. 1 cubic foot = 7.481 liquid gallons or 6.429 dry gallons I have varied from this slightly by using 1.5 parts peat to 4 parts CHCs, but now that I've had a chance to observe my plants for some weeks now the recommended 4:1 is probably sufficient. I could not find any one year slow release fertilizer so I'm using some four month stuff, but given Florida's warm climate it probably releases faster than that. .....Alan.

Signet, remember you are also a zone 6 which means that you get frost a lot later than we do in zone 2 or 3. So, being that replanting the iris needs to be with enough time to get the iris re-established before freeze up here in zone 2 - 3, that means that replanting should be done no later than the end of August. A friend of mine has hundreds and hundreds of iris here in the Brandon area and that is the advice that she gives. There is a problem though when buying irises in the fall here on the prairies because the Ontario and BC growers will not send out the irises to the nurseries and box stores until about the middle of September and then it is usually only the tall German irises and the occasional SDB that are sent. They do not ideally have time to get established before our freezeups. So, now, when buying some of these, I have grown them over in the house for the winter and planted them out into the garden in the spring. Personally, so far, I have never had a problem here with irises heaving out of the ground. I rather think that I would be unable to stomp them back into the ground because once my ground is frozen, it is frozen. A friend of mine lives in Dartmouth and she does have perennials heave out of the ground in the winter. I know that she is rather frustrated sometimes when it happens. Do you feel the same way Signet? I have had problems with deer coming and pulling/nibbling on the iris just before freezeup and thus leaving the iris on the top of the soil for the winter, but that is a different story. Brenda

Natanya, You sound like such a hoot! Wish you were my neighbor. I've never tasted a daylily, but good for you. I saw someone asking for daylilies to trade for other plants on the plant exchange. They said they heard they were good "dipped in butter". I sort of cringed without even thinking... seemed canabalistic for a moment. I guess I am really too involved with my daylilies to consider them as food. I guess though that if we were starving, we'd sure be able to go to the garden and do some nibbling. Don't worry about that neighbor...she probably didn't even know what you were doing, and if she did, well so what. Happy gardening, Nina in SE PA

Guess they all don't live in the rain forest. There is a flock of them in Sunnyvale, CA (near San Jose). Amazon green parrots that fly about squalking loudly and they like to eat the berries in the Chinese Pistache street trees. Believe me, there is NO rain here. These have been here for over 25 years. Fun to see. Kudos to that Texas nursery for providing entertainment! Where's Moccasin...she has a small home and posts here...and has parrots too! -Babka

The interesting thing about Cinco de Mayo is the color in summer is so orange-y, at least at my house. Usually in summer blooms fade,not get brighter.

This one too is a little faded. It is loaded down with blooms. The nursery I buy from takes excellent care of their plants. Althogh, their roses have no shelter to speak of. I am hoping that with brief late afternoon shade, they will have time to recoup.

I am still looking for a bright orange!

These are some oranges that remain orange in Tennessee summer sun:
Orange flame: truly saturated orange-red, a floribunda created by Ben Williams in Maryland and available from Roses Unlimited.
Golden Salmon Superior (also at Roses Unlimited) a cluster blooming polyantha that is predominantly deep orange with red overtones, but (and I find this fascinating) some sprays will bloom deep red and some sprays will be a mix of orange and red. Does really well in acidic red clay soils in the east.
Orange Triumph: from Kordes in Germany, more red than orange, but extremely healthy deep green foliage.

David Austin's introduction Pat Austin has orange petals with a yellow reverse and both sides are bright. This one needs spraying to do its best.

You know another orange that is unusual? About Face(Grandiflora)! Wow what an interesting beautiful yellow and on the flip side orange to die for. The contrast is stunning. Medium green healthy and lush foliage and tons o' flowers! The blooms can look very HT to "English" double ( comparable to Golden Celebration.) Long vase life and it smells like an apple. It has been my best rose actually. If you don't have it, I would check and see if will grow in your zone.
Has been an outstanding rose in all ways. Never stops blooming and starts early.

I have almost bought Cinco De Mayo 10 times this spring, and Disneyland looks so fun! I want them all what can I say. :-)
Gingersnap is an unusual one. My Dad is into the oranges. He loves his Sunstruck!

My favorite orange is Laura Bush. Mine is in it's second year and is doing good so far.

Why the sad face? YOu should be glad! I have people walk by often saying, "those certainly aren't your usual roses" and "what are they? Roses? REALLY?" I love that! I volunteer at a garden center once a year, and the faces some people make if the rose isn't red or pink amuses me. Keep your boring (yes, I said it!) red HTs, there are many, many more colors for me to grow!

CDM is a nice rose. For an bright orange, look up "Vavoom."
The buds are bright orange as they begin to open, but i do believe they fade when in full bloom. I saw vavoom at a nursery with a nearly opened bud, and the petals were a real intense orange, very interesting color to me.
