Who has a Bobo this season?
Comments (30)Bobo is by far one of the best Hydrangea paniculata cultivars I've come across. It stays compact, doesn't flop and flowers extremely well...including in some shade. A better compact cultivar than Little Lime as this plant can barely hold up the flowers. I have one massing that is now 4 years in the ground. Trialing Little Quickfire right now so we'll see how that one compares. Good to see these consistencies with others. My first trial plant has been in the ground for 3 years and is just shy of 3' and just exploding with blooms as shown above. I have a two other groupings in the ground for 2 years and they have the same flower power. Bombshell on the other hand is the biggest POS ever of any plant and believe everyone involved in its introduction should be banned for life. I have a 4 year old massing that splayed out BEFORE if flowered! Plus is took 4 years for it to have a poor flower showing. BOOOO!!...See MoreBobo, Annabelle, or Little Lime?
Comments (42)NHBabs, I wonder if we should also consider the climate/zone too. When I lived in Zone 5 all of my paniculatas grew to full size quickly. Here in Zone 3, it's a whole different story for me... 3 years later, my QF is still only 3 x 3 feet even though it started as a big plant in a 5 gallon pot. The same for my Pinky Winky, etc etc. Something to think about......See MoreRio Samba companion plants ?
Comments (9)Simplepie, What is your zone? Knowing your zone will greatly help in advising you further. Preliminary suggestions are perennial hardy hibiscus between the Rose of Sharon and the Rio Samba rose. White, yellow, red, pink, and purple bodacious blooms in the heat of summer, when Rio Samba may be in a slump is the selling point I see with the hibiscus. You can go bold with red hibiscus or subdued with yellow or white. For a blooming ground cover: Geranium 'Rozanne' 20" X 24" blooms from spring to fall, beautiful blue. Coreopsis 'Moonbeam' 18" X 14" blooms endlessly, soft yellow. Salvia 'Maynight' 18" X 16" one of the few perennials that sends up new basal growth all summer, after the first spring surge, if dead headed, purplish. Salvia 'Marcus' 12" X 12" blooms June to October, just like S. 'Maynight', grape blue flowers. Plant these perennials measuring their distances from each other using the second number of inches listed above for each plant's mature dimensions, as the distance from center to center of each variety. That way the plants will just touch each other at maturity and make a dense, continuous ground cover. Mix or match them. These species are work horse perennials, tops in the perennial world....See MoreHYDRANGEA 2017
Comments (42)At this house, so far I have planted 10 "Annabelle" (a MUST HAVE for colder zones!), some of which were given to me and some of which I purchased, 3 "Sykes Dwarf" Oakleafs and a "Limelight" tree form (both on major clearance last fall), and a "Little Quickfire" paniculata that I bought in June. Obviously, I love hydrangeas LOL! I want to get more oakleafs, I adore the foliage - both in season and in the fall when it turns a gorgeous red - and the huge panicles; when I work on some other beds I will work more in. I've posted in another post re: "Bobo" just didn't do it for me at my other house, so when I wanted a paniculata around the patio, I passed this cultivar right by and went for the "Little Quickfire" instead, which has been quite nice for just being planted....See Morerouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a)
