Definitely not now! I'd do it in spring, when they are just beginning to show.

be prepared to water them non stop but otherwise hostas will do fine, specially if they planted in shade, have done it before, hosta are pretty indestructable plants. I would wait till later in the summer if possible but it certainly can be done. Of course we are talking about plain lancifolias and undulata/ univitata....right?

or go to the HOSTA FORUM ... and find the post on moving fully leafed out hosta.. for many specifics.. but use the system to divide the plant ...

It's a fine time....just remember....water water and more water!
But any fully leafed out plant you move now will need lots of water
Actually it's a pretty darned good time because as long as you keep lots of the leaves, the hosta will make good roots and come up like gangbusters next spring.

I would wait. I moved some last month which I typically wouldn't do, but we were having a cooler and wetter than normal June. Spring is the best time, but fall is fine. I have done it in the middle of summer before, but that's always a risk. I just could not water them enough and one eventually died. The ground was also too hard and dry for me to dig as deeply as I needed to. Personally I would wait a few more months.

i have successfully moved hosta at this time of year ... several days before i plan to move it, i *thoroughly* water & then use a pitchfork all around the perimeter the next day ...
(again, let the hose trickle down the pitchfork circle for several hours) ...
after a couple more days, i move it to the new spot (which has also been prepared in advance)

A different thing happened today. Rather than transplanting the existing hostas, I happen to see a person selling different varieties of hostas on Craigslist. I went there today and bought 'em. I only spent $20.

I brought home the following:

1. 10 hostas (4 different kinds)
2. 6 irises (2 different kinds)

Majority of the hostas had good number of leaves and were about 12 to 16 inches long. The 4 irises were 2 ft long. The other 2 iris looked like lilies.

Now, I'm thinking what to put behind these hostas/irises.

I'll take a picture tomorrow morning. Oh, on the leftmost are the wilting hostas my wife bought a month ago. That's what I was planning to divide and transplant. It's really huge.

One more, I have a 50 ft soaker hose. Can I water them every morning for 15 minutes?

Here is an update. I completed installing low voltage lighting just an hour ago. It was easy to install. Took me only 45 minutes. :)

Looking good....now water water and then water some more!!
But be aware that hosta and iris don't like the same conditions. Hostaw ant lots of water, iris like it dry, hosta will grow very well in shade, iris won't, hosta love to be munched, iris don't.
Good luck....and remember....WATER those hosta very well every day!
