Oklahoma bloom buds struggling

Here's the scenario: When I went with my son and chose this rose I looked for a plant (about 1 gallon size) that had very healthy-looking foliage and buds getting ready to open. Except those buds are really struggling. I kept it well-watered, and planted it almost a week ago.

Around here, roses are just starting to get to a decent size after winter, so I wonder if the rose came from a greenhouse or warmer climate and is just really offended at our cold, dark Spring.

Should I clip those bloom buds? Would that encourage new growth and buds? There is one bud of four that tried to open, and I can glimpse that scent. What a tease! The plant looks extremely healthy otherwise. Way too cold and early for insect troubles.

Transplant shock is real! In all my years of gardening, I have never been able to narrow it down to an exact science, but plants often rebel about being transplanted. The length of time and severity vary, but most come back eventually. Going from a controlled greenhouse environment to cold spring soil may be the ticket.

What Harry said! Don't be sure about insects. We had 15Â°F a couple weeks ago, frost and snow last week. Found aphids on some of the roses Saturday. Oklahoma is one of my alltime favorite roses. Good luck :)

Hi again! I was hoping someone else would chime in. It's very hard to say when you can expect your first bloom, as it is so dependent on your individual conditions (light, temp, water) What I can tell you is that once it starts blooming, it should bloom for a couple of months. Remember, Jason Fisher is a sequential bloomer, which means that it will hold one, sometimes two perfect blooms for a few days and then drop them...which means that even then you might have a bloom free day... good luck!

"They are in the same place as the ones I had last year, so conditions are pretty much identical." Step back and try to think of any differences in plant growing pattern;- watering frequency, fertilizer change or different brand used. Often, observing the plants by comparing the internodes and leaves can give you a good idea. I believe Ipomoea actually bloom better with out too much fertilizer anyway.

Need Help Growing Camellias in Oklahoma

I have grown camellias outdoors in the ground and in pots here since 1992. The first thing to consider is that some camellias are only hardy to 10' to 20'F. There are some species and cultivars that are hardy to -5' F. The less hardy ones I grow in pots and only bring them into the garage during the absolute coldest days of winter, other wise they are sheltered from the west and north winds by my house. During the summer, I take the potted ones into the backyard for partial sun and protection from the late western sun. I have had good luck planting the more hardier varieties on the north side of my house for partial sun. They are protected from the winter winds from my neighbors house just to the North.I also have one planted on the east side of a large pine tree that as done well. The winter winds here seem to dissicate the foliage too much if they have too much exposure.I have mostly planted in amended raised beds because of my poor draining clay soil. I don't like peat because once it dries its hard to get wet again, so I usually use Cotton burr dirt, compost, pine needles or fine pinebark as soil amendments. Bloom time varies, some of the species are fall blooming ( here its usually OCT/NOV), winter blooming, and some bloom in spring. I have the "April Series" from Camellia Forest Nursery and they bloom here March to May. Hope this helps. I would try to ID which varieties you have before I did anything with them. Phil

Hi Kenny !! Beautiful flowers as always !! I think I could hear you gasp when you saw that first root on the CS. Lol! That is how I felt with my Metallica!!! ;-) Mike. Great blooms!! I will check on the branching on my tree when I get home. It doesn't seem to have any issues with the branching , I would have remembered it from last year. They all branch In two to three tips for me. The one that stayed a single tip when it bloomed? ...... Metallica!! Wouldn't you know it! arrrgghh Hi Jen!! I'm glad you had some fragrance in your DS bloom!! ;-). Heat and humidity do play a large factor in the scent and coloration of the blooms. There is no doubt about that!! Hope you are well!!! Wow. diggerdave, your pics are gporgeous! I hope this rose does well!

Thanks for the encouragement from both of you. It really wasn't doing anything in the pot, either, so I hope it will come around as things warm up. Fortunately, today is supposed to be sunny all day and near seventy.

Glad you like them :) Please excuse the brief posts. Cut the extensor tendon of my right thumb and typing is a chore. Clipping the buds might help but I would not be able to do it. I would have to chance it and hope to be able to smell those wonderful blooms :)

I have a question..I saw grafted Oklahoma's at a K-mart yesterday, and every single plant with fully opened blooms had **very** purplish hues to the blooms..is this typical for Oklahoma blooms or maybe it was a weather related thing, as they had just come in from somewhere else..I'm assuming a much warmer place? I think Oklahoma is pretty deep red. Did you see diggerdave's pics? (Heal up! Nasty wound....)

I think I am going to have to clip the buds. I tried helping the one trying the hardest and even it doesn;t want to open. The others are not getting bigger, or redder, or rounder. As a matter off act, they are getting rock-hard. I think I'll clip them and hope for some more. Soon!
