I have not sprayed except for Round Up for many years now. But when I did, I got a regular sprayer (Hudson might be the name.) I bought one that was not the same color as Round Up, but only once did i get a hose end sprayer.

I did not control the hose end sprayer well, and it did not spray. I always wanted to use the least amount that would do the job. That meant for me to measure, and put it in the tank.

Storage has been my problem. I cannot store a tank upside down, so my hose always gets dried out and bent before the sprayer gets old.

Gilmour 1000P 1-Gallon Teal Premium Traditional Sprayer. We got this a decade ago under the Spray Doc brand--just replaced the hand valve--works fine again. We now use the 2 gallon version with a brass wand to spray 200+ roses.

There's no precision in hose-end sprayers. Don't use one except when spraying the entire yard, not specific roses.

Unfortunately, the 1-2 gallon tank sprayers are a commodity these days. They are so cheap you might as well buy a new one at the start of every season - or two, if you rinse and clean it well.

With a few exceptions, you have to get up to the backpack sprayer size to get some real manufacturer support - spare parts, overhaul capability, and customization options. The Solo is probably the one best known. Solo makes a pretty good tank sprayer (see link below), but you're paying almost as much as you would for a backpack sprayer.

Thanks guys for the recommendations. I think I found a possible cause for the problem: water pressure. Sprayer is rated at 40-60 psi and our water pressure may be lower. Maybe that's what causes the trouble.
Anyway, I will check Solo sprayers.

No, it's not the water pressure. Hose end sprayers are meant for spraying an entire yard and have no finesse in them. Dilution is chancy, and you can't control the spray pattern or width. I use them only for spraying lawns or up into trees where I need to take advantage of the city's water pressure to get 20ft up into a tree.

Like everything else these days, sprayers are made cheaply and not intended to last or be fixed. But loss of pressure holding ability can often be fixed with vaseline applied to the gaskets on the pump. Gaskets dry out and leak until greased. Hudson sprayers should come with instructions on how to grease the gaskets. There's the obvious O ring where the cylinder threads onto the sprayer, and then there's another one inside the pump.

We use Solo backpack sprayers at work, but that's too much for my little garden, so at home I use a half gallon sprayer from the local hardware store. Two, actually, one for herbicides, one for the roses. Always use a separate sprayer for herbicides. Both are on their third season now with no issues, so I got my money's worth out of them.
