I gather from your having peonies that you live in a place with a winter. Would you be interested in indicating where you live and your climate zone? This is useful when you ask or offer advice, and besides, it helps others imagine your garden, which you've already described above.

A reasonable compromise is to let one bud develop and open to a bloom, then sacrifice the rest. The truth is, roses from a mature plant may well be much nicer than the ones on babies anyway. But it it is so difficult to not let any bloom at all.

Welcome, and congratulations! Listen, not EVERY rose requires dis budding to mature. Some are perfectly vigorous enough to flower and still grow. However, some definitely are NOT. Many own root Teas, Climbing Teas and particularly yellow Tea-Noisettes and some Chinas can take forever to develop and mature into the plants you expect them to be. Permitting them to flower only slows their development.

Weak, stingy growers such as Austin's Dove; many of the earlier gray, brown and green roses; many of the Tea-like earlier HTs can also drag their feet, producing begrudging inches of growth. Permitting them to flower will slow them down greatly, too.

Then, you have some more modern climbers, such as Kordes' Rosarium Uetersen, Renae and my Annie Laurie McDowell which will sit and flower like a blooming weed while refusing to climb. If you want to push these to climb, you pinch off the buds, forcing that energy into pushing elongated canes from the plants in their efforts to bloom again.

Budding these particular types will speed up their development quite a bit, but they still benefit from dis budding to push growth. Own root versions of them are significantly slower to develop. It's with these that dis budding provides the greatest benefit.

It is quite possible your roses won't require dis budding to develop into the plants you desire, in the time frame you have in mind. Whether they will or not, they very likely will mature into what you hope for faster if you don't let them flower. Whether you permit flowering as they desire; permit only some of the flowers to mature and open or simply continue dis budding them until they are the size you want them to be is up to you. Enjoy whatever flowers you want to, but keep in mind that if they are taking longer than you hoped to develop into the plants you expected or desired, removing the flowers to force growth should help you get what you want, closer to when you want it. Congradulations. Have a wonderful time with your garden. I just wanted to tell you about climbing Gruss an Achen. I planted mine on a pillar imaging that it couldn't be that vigorous. It's unbelievably vigorous. You'll just have to be prepared. I wish I had given it a huge wall or fence to spread out on. Right now I'm giving it its head to run to the top of the pillar and explode. It's quite impressive.

Welcome to the rose garden! I know that everyone says to clip the buds but truthfully I never do. I can't bear to. I don't think I've ever lost a bush because of it. But I also don't plant the right into the ground right away either. I keep them potted for a while and let them grow bigger before transplanting them. I figure they've been potted at what ever nursery you got them form and were happy and healthy enough to put on those buds so why clip them if I'm keeping them in a pot? By the time I plant them out they're bigger and stronger and do better all around for me.

Thank you for the welcoming posts as well as the guidance. I will get them into their places this weekend and determine the fate of the buds :-) In the meantime, I am excitedly awaiting my first rose flush of the season. My hybrid musks are going to make a gorgeous display in my dappled shade this year. Queen of Sweden and Francis duBreil look like they might jump out of the group this year as well.
