My first rose ever

Try to grow some roses in the hardy zone 5 this year, hopefully some of them will survie the hard winter here.

Here is my first rose bloom, please give me some encouragement. :-)

I must say, that is one spectacular bloom! Did you check High Country's website for some cold hardy roses? They have a section dedicated to rose hardy in zone 5 and above.

I have heard it is pretty common to plant dormant roses in late fall after the first frost. However, there are a few things you need to take into account and thus most people recommend you wait until spring if possible. 1. The roses needed to be hardened off for the winter which means several weeks of temperatures in the 40s. Since they were with a grower, you assume that they gave the roses these conditions which isn't always the case since some of them might have been left sitting in a greenhouse or protected. 2. The second problem lies in the fact that November might not necessarily mean constant cold conditions. Last year, in our zone 6 we had a pretty warm November. This would make the rose start new growth which is the last thing you want during the winter. You want it to stay cold so the rose stays dormant all winter long. Hard to guarantee with the odd weather in recent years. Thus, I would say opt for spring delivery if possible.

For future reference it is not necessary to separate the rootlings. And doing so always injures the root systems of these small plants. I have tried it myself several times and always loose most or all of them. Now I just pot up the entire pot, as one plant, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. I haven't lost one since starting this. The resulting plant is much larger and healthier. The dark line is not a good sign. It usually means the cane is dying back. But since they are getting new leaves I'd just leave them alone for now. Keep them watered but do not feed them. They're stressed out and need time to recuperate and build new roots. Put them in a place that gets good morning sun and let them rest.

No, Burgundy Iceberg isn't used for rootstock. A rootstock used in the past, Ragged Robin, looks similar, but RR has yellow stamens.

I have Sexy Rexy and the bloom shape is right but the foliage is wrong compared to mine. Mine has a lot of tiny, shiny foliage. I agree the blooms are too big. Maybe an Austin?

Thanks so much! So nice of you guys. Tammy, the website is great, and I will need more time, and do more research to find the ones I like.

I will keep updating with my new rose pics later. Some of them, I already forgot the names because I threw the packages away after I put them on ground (newbie, you know :-). I will need your expertise help to ID them.

I think it is "double delight", very fragrant. But the flower is not as large as they say, maybe it will need more time to establish.

I thought it looked like Double Delight too. Don't worry, as they mature the blooms will get larger.

Too bad, I think I already became addicted. I checked all of them at least twice one by one everyday. I grow about 30 roses this year, cannot wait for their blooms.

Hi,Harmony,

Actually my camera is pretty old, Olympus E500, I got it about 6 years ago. I guess the light/weather is very important to take the close-up macro picture. You might need to shoot many and pick the best 1 or 2 from them. lol
