Should i buy JD LX255 or LA120

I've been reading through forum topics over the past few weeks while shopping for a riding mower for my 1 acre flat yard.

I was going to buy a LA120 from a dealer but saw an ad for a 4 yr old LX255 for $1000.

Looked at machine, runs fine looks well maintained.

If this LX is a good or better machine i'd like to save a cool $800. Which should i get?

The LX is leaps and bounds better then the LA120. I would buy it in a heartbeat if it was in good running condition. That is a very good price as well. Does it have an hour meter?

I took another look at my Wheel Horse manual (1995 312-8) and found the following: Avoid operating equipment on hillsides, slopes or rough terrain. DO NOT operate machine on hillsides or slopes exceeding 15 degrees (27% grade). If safety is in doubt - STAY OFF THE SLOPE. Reduce speed and exercise extreme caution on slopes above 10 degrees (18% grade) to prevent tipping or loss of control. Never mow uphill on these slopes - mow downhill only. If a steep hill must be ascended, back up the hill, and drive forward down the hill, keeping tractor in gear. If necessary to turn on hill, always turn downhill. Mow up and down the face of slopes greater than 5 degrees (9% grade), never across the face. Be especially cautious when changing directions on all slopes. Do not stop or start suddenly when going uphill or downhill. Avoid uphill starts. If machine is stopped going up a slope, turn the attachment off and back slowly down the slope keeping the machine in gear. Do not stop or change gears (speed) on slopes.color> I think it's interesting that the manual advises mowing uphill in reverse. I can understand how it would reduce the chance of an end-over-end flip but it would come at the expense of reduced visibility. Also, more recent manuals state that hills shouldn't be mowed across regardless of grade and turns shouldn't be made on a slope. Keep in mind that my manual is 12 years old and is for a GT class tractor with a gear tranny. -Deerslayer

Check teh level of teh mower deck when in teh mowing position. The Freedom deck needs to be more flat than the regular decks, just a very slight tip toward the front. The owners manual has the specifics and JD among others sells a very cheap level guage to make checking easy. Also, there is a big difference between cutting in straight lines and cutting while turning. Mulching requires mowing at a slower speed than a side discharge deck, to allow full pulverizing action. Note that the freedom deck has very little lift (vacuum) to pull up the blades for cutting, so that may also contribute to the need for a slower speed. Apparently the mulching decks do not like to cut while turning, so most advice is to make a couple of passes all around the target lawn area, and then do straight passes, turning in the areas you cut on the first pass. Final advice I have read is to vary the cutting height and see what difference it makes. Said tob e very critical to get just teh right height and the height varies by type of grass being cut. Something around 2 3/4" is a good start, then try a few passes at differing heights (in 1/4" increments) and see what happens. I have been cutting with a Freedom 42 for just this season, but so far, it is an absoultely great cut and no clippings at all(at 2 3/4"), but I haven't got to the drier grass of mid-summer yet.

Further on the PTO. It is the mechanism that connects the motor to whatever you want to apply power to, in your case the mower deck. The simple ones are manual, operated with a short lever that merely rotates a shaft with a pulley on it to take up slack in the mower drive belt. With an electric PTO, the mower drive belt is kept at a more constant tension between engine pulley and mower deck pulleys, while there is a clutch between the motor pulley and the actual motor shaft. This clutch is electrically actived by a toggle switch to engage the clutch and drive the blade. The electric system is more elegant, has longer belt life, and can be fairly expensive to repair (but seldom seems to fail). The manual systems vary somewhat among the brands, but at least the JD system seems quite well designed and very practical for anything you are going to use it for, at a nice cost saving that will more than cover a couple of extra drive belts over the life of the mower.

I had a Snapper RER and got rid of it for a JD Rider because with the small deck (28") and terrible turning radius (the little front tires push quite a bit when turning at any reasonable speed) it took longer to mow than it did with my 22" Toro Push. My lawn is ~1/2 acre, mostly flat as well. The Snappers are very reliable and built like a tank (ride like a tank too), just get a bigger deck and you would probably be alright. As you might have surmised, I would go with the 120.

LA = Junk to compete with Sears, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart.

LX = REAL TRACTOR built to perform and last.

You do the math.

I dont agree with the statement that some have said that the LA series is junk.I know it most likely wont last as long as higher end models but for the average user like me ill be happy to get ten years or more from one.Some may say cheap new anything is considered junk! if so then i have to say that i have alot of junk around here that has lasted 25 years or more.I will say that the LX255 may be the better tractor of the two.

Your LX is a bit cheaper than the one listed below, so I'd probably buy it if it were me.

I see people on this forum putting down the L-LA series JDs all the time calling them junk & cheap Lowes-HD crap etc. My yard is flat & only 1/4 acre...maybe less and I bought the LA120 from the local JD dealer. I don't know why in the world I would need anything any bigger or heaver built than that and probably could have gotten by with the LA100. I think there's a place for every JD model (other brands as well) it just depends on what your needs are. I could have bought the X304....but that would have been kind of silly now wouldn't it ?. If we don't get rain here soon I won't even need a mower.

Well, if you are going to buy a brand new LA, you might as well spend a few hundred dollars more and get an X300. The X300 is miles away better than the LA series. It will run much longer and smoother with less trouble and better comfort, and the X300 will have much better resale value.

You get what you pay for.

Personaly, I would buy a 1-2 year old garden tractor for the same price. There are some great deals out there on used GT and GX series tractors.

Deere has really screwed the pooch with the cheap LA series in the box stores. They've watered the brand reputation down. Should have kept with the Saber or Scotts line or some other brand differentiation to avoid harming the Deere brand.

$2,899 - $1500 = 1399 and with the bagger its way out of my price range.For the yard that i have and what im using i think my LA100 will do the job and i cant justify buying a x series tractor.

Don't settle for 10 years of service. Go for the LX and make it 30.

The LX255 is a very well built mower. I owned one for 5 trouble free years years.As a matter of fact it was sold last spring for $1800 (they sold new in the $3500 range). So, if the one your looking at is in good condition. Go for it.

I have a ten year old LX. Wouldn't trade even up for a NEW LA. Go for the LX.

If you have a 1/4 acre or less go to Lowes and get a LA there fine where a push mower is all you need.But a John Deere looks better mowing a postage stamp.But if you have a lawn go for the LX255.Duke88 IS 100% correct.Sort of kind a LOL.
