JD LX255 poor cutting

Hello,

Got the JD LX255 with the Freedom 42 cuting deck. The problem Im having is with the cuting quality. It just doesnt seem to cut all that well. Leaving uncut grass in patches. Ive cleaned the deck a lot and sharped the blades numerous times. Just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what I could look at? The mower runs great and I changed the belt last year after it broke on me. Other than that, it works great.

Also, if anyone knows of any other good forums dealing with this problem, that I could post on, that would be good too.

Normally Deeres cut supurbely. Are both your blades at the same level, is there something different. Is one bent slightly. I would buy a new set and start with that. It is probably not anything to major. Is one of the bearings in the deck worn or loose?

Just a couple of thoughts.

A most entertaining thread. Some parts of it sort of reminded me of 2 old tomcats (literally, felines) that resided in 2 different houses across the street from the house I had at that time. Both yards were fenced. I would sometimes observe these toms glaring and spitting/hissing/growling at each other through the fence for what seemed like hours at a time. I'm sure either cat could have scaled the fence and "lit into" the other cat if it truly wanted to. My next door neighbor used to laugh at the cats and say, "Yep, one of them is scared to death and the other one is glad of it." BTW, kandykane, early in this thread you cited the fact that Cub and Simplicity weren't averse to declaring the thickness of their respective frames "Cub has 9 gauge and Simplicity has 10 gauge." I hope you understand that 9 gauge is thicker than 10 gauge, but, thickness isn't all that counts. The alloy and extent of heat treatment, and bracing all play a part in the ultimate durability of anything.

JD X-300 ... too much side discharge?

... As far as I can tell anyway. I've noticed the side discharge issue since I bought the tractor last summer. I leveled the deck back then, and have checked it several times since ... no change, it's leveled properly according to the manual. The deck level only came up when one replys above suggested that the dealer should have given me the "regular" blades when he installed the bagger and high-lift blades that came with that kit. In my response I noted that the dealer had failed to properly adjust the deck and tire inflation when he delivered the tractor to me, so it's also quite possible that he didn't bother to install the high lift blades in the bagger kit. He did install the baffle, which is supposed to correct side discharge. From the responses above, it would seem that this may an overall JD design issue since others are noting the same thing. I'll pick up some high lift blades sometime this summer and try that. If that dosen't work, I'll contact JD Marketing and get ahold of the Brand Manager on the X-300.

I have an LT 160 with Freedom 42 deck, and I love it. It operates much more quietly than with the 42C deck that I also have for the LT (for Fall clean-up with bagger), also much cleaner as far as dust , etc thrown up - I get off feeling clean versus gritty with the 42C. It has a great cut on our Kentucky Bluegrass, fescue, etc Northeast lawn, and you can't see any clipings at all (where others say the 42C with mulching kit does leave clippings of various lengths). It is faster due to the ability to cut on both sides right up to beds, without throwing clippngs into the flowers, etc, and of course much faster than bagging. The timing belts are susceptible to breaking if you catch a stump, rock or root with a blade. Otherwise they apparently last quite a few years. For me, a new belt because I didn't pay attention to where I was cutting is well worth it for the benefits of the Freedom performance. It even does a good job when the grass has been rained on just an hour or so before (not true with the mulch kits or baggers for sure)

Well now, I don't know from personal experience what you should be looking at if you have the pump removed from the tank. But I do remember reading a couple of threads on this board where JD owners of 425 and 445 models had a defective fuel hose inside the tank. The hose would develop a split and simply dump the pumped gas right out inside the tank. You have a pair of hoses that connect to the tank, one is for fuel delivery to the injection site, the other hose is for excess fuel to return to the fuel tank. There has to be some hose connection provision in the fuel pump/tank arrangement to carry the pumped fuel to the engine. Hopefully one of the John Deere gurus will chime in here and give better specifics. I tried a short search of the thread archives to find the other threads where I read this info (maybe a year or so back) but have not found either of them yet.

Check teh level of teh mower deck when in teh mowing position. The Freedom deck needs to be more flat than the regular decks, just a very slight tip toward the front. The owners manual has the specifics and JD among others sells a very cheap level guage to make checking easy. Also, there is a big difference between cutting in straight lines and cutting while turning. Mulching requires mowing at a slower speed than a side discharge deck, to allow full pulverizing action. Note that the freedom deck has very little lift (vacuum) to pull up the blades for cutting, so that may also contribute to the need for a slower speed. Apparently the mulching decks do not like to cut while turning, so most advice is to make a couple of passes all around the target lawn area, and then do straight passes, turning in the areas you cut on the first pass. Final advice I have read is to vary the cutting height and see what difference it makes. Said tob e very critical to get just teh right height and the height varies by type of grass being cut. Something around 2 3/4" is a good start, then try a few passes at differing heights (in 1/4" increments) and see what happens. I have been cutting with a Freedom 42 for just this season, but so far, it is an absoultely great cut and no clippings at all(at 2 3/4"), but I haven't got to the drier grass of mid-summer yet.

Thanks for all the follow ups guys.
I dont think it has anything to do with turning and cutting because it seems to happen even in the straight lines of cut. I do not mow fast either. My neighbor right next to me has a newer JD mower that cuts REALLY nice. So I will try a new set of blades first and see what happens. Im sure the blades are due to be changed. I will post back.
