Need tips for preparing a huge planter for perennials next year

We just bought our first place and there is a huge planter wrapping around the front and side of the house. I'm itching to plant some stuff but we still want to paint the stucco on the house this fall so think I need to wait until Spring. What kind of things can I be doing to get this planter in the best shape for next year?

Right now it is a bunch of crab grass, small neglected rose bushes and a single yucca. I started digging up the grass. Soil is sandy and fast draining.

I have lots of mulched wood chips from trees we are cutting and lots of other lawn cuttings. Should I be digging out a good portion of the dirt to replace with compost? I want to do this right.
