Thanks so much for the input. I guess it only makes sence that the union would be at the base, as it is on the other roses. So, trying to winter that will be a problem. Will it be OK inside or should I farm it out to someone with a garage or better yet a green house for the winter? The soil is so incredibly hard, it doesn't hold moisture and is almost like cement. I think I will re pot it and give it a better environment, a good soil mixed with some compost. Should I keep the same sized pot or could it stand to go up a size? I really want this plant to not only make it, but thrive, but being one who has never had a tree rose before, I am not sure the proper care they need. Maybe they like poor soil??? Fruitnut -- Surround and DE are different. DE is not clay at all. It's the shells of tiny, ancient sea creatures. I haven't read about any protection against sunlight. Apparently, it cuts up the bugs and sucks the life out them. That's all. I didn't use DE for a long time because the applicators I found didn't appeal to me. The only information you have given us is 'they are the exact same tree' and that may be true but subtle differences in location can change variables in these cases. A boulevard tree, for instance may get some salt from snow plowing. A tree close to other trees will not get as much sun as others in the open. That's why you might see some trees already past peak with fall colors while others that are the exact same species still have green leaves. This year in my country, color change has been scattered with spotty frost pockets and strong winds. Some years everything seems to change at the same time, some years not so much.

i doubt sitting in water for a few hours one day had much of anything to do with all this.. besides .. if that would have caused a problem it would have been a root problems.. and it wouldnt have showed up in a few days ... so its probably the sun problem ... its was stressed from shipping .. the sun stressed it .. its stressed ... get it in full bright shade.. and let it settle down and hopefully it will releaf and get going ... one other caveat.. thats a pretty small pot to ever have the pot itself in the sun.. it might allow the roots to get to hot.. wait for it.. stressing the plant even more ... and being on a brick patio in the sun you might take into consideration radiant heat from the brick ... also.. if it was greenhosue grown.. thats a whole other level of light intensity stress ... good job on the seller sending a new plant.. no matter what happens to this one ... you will have a free plant ... in my MI .. later freezes are a thing.. and a hard hit rose can and will releaf ... if the plant is well established ... yours is not.. but there are still good odds it can recover and come back... if you put it in full bright shade.. and water it properly .. it is not a water loving houseplant .. so do not keep it sodden ... but dont let it go bone dry ... ken
