Is this Austin's The Countryman, or a mislabel?

Problems, problems tonight. I bought this rose from Hortico (I know, I know) in March and this is the first time it has flowered. These flowers are freshly opened to reveal their stamens--they are not close to blowing. This does not match any picture of The Countryman I have seen, particularly not the picture in the "100 English Roses for the American Garden" book. Can anyone comment on whether I got The Countryman or a mislabelled rose?

Often times, the first blooms of a rose are not representative of the rose when it is mature. Give it some time and see. I don't grow it, but I looked it up, and particlarly the pics on HMF posted by "tata" look very much like your pic. Donna

What are they yellow tagged as? I saw many tagged as Gene Boerner and I dug a bit, but no DA tags. I also saw one yellow tagged (can't remember the name) but it had another white tag reading Waiheke. You can tell the picture doesnt match the rose. I started feelin weird so I left. I would love to run into a Scepter d'Isle, Eglantyne or a JTO, though!

I agree with Marlorena - I would put it in a pot in a nice sunny location - once you have a better idea of it's habit & how you like it, you can plant it in the ground next spring (or not). Either way, it's a fun gardening experiment! But, if you really don't want a pink rose (since you were shopping for a white rose!), I also think it's totally reasonable to return it - just don't wait too long, as the sooner you bring it back the more likely they are to take it.

They all arrived in excellent condition. The only common denominator is that they were planted into the ground. However I had plenty planted in the ground and do just fine . So I’m not sure what the deal is but next year I’ll plant in pots to start with i think . Not that I have any ground space left anyway ! I can’t decide if o want to replace the Bathsheba locally or just pair with a clematis for my arbor . Vapor your friend will be thrilled ! Even some of them that came smaller than others look so good now I couldn’t tell the difference. Helen I’m glad you were able to get a good set from Costco !! It would be great If they sold more . Their prices are excellent for their roses

I agree, it does have the Austin look. Could it be Bolero? Bolero varies a lot from white to cream with peach, yellow or pink toward the center, and has a lovely strong scent. It's more likely that Home Depot would have Bolero than an Austin, but it's happened. There are several Boleros listed on HMF. The most popular is from Meilland, bred by Mouchotte. If that's what it is, congratulations, you got a winner.

Good advice by Donna. I don't grow this one either, but on HMF, the pics by Rosenschule Ruf, a German nursery, also look like a match. And so do the leaves on most HMF pics.

As to Hortico, I've had a ton of problems with the quality of their plants and delayed and random shipping (as in June (!) to NC where I lived), but I've never received a mislabeled rose from them, fwiw.

Feed it well and let it grow and see what it does!
