rambler rose, pink, to grow up plum tree

What pink rambler would do well on the southeast side of my house, growing up an old plum tree? I plan to add two clematis to the planting as well. I'd like the rambler to grow about 15' up, or more. I am on the ocean, so tolerance to salt spray would help. I also need to know where to order my roses from, here in coastal BC, Canada. Does anyone have a favorite supplier? Can we order from U.S. suppliers? Any advice would be much appreciated, I've never grown a rose before!

I've started to try to grow a rose up a plum tree this year, too (in a box, in a mix). Not pink, sort of orange (pinkish orange?).

A wichurana rambler; Paul Transon, from early 1900s. Large flower, supposed to have a moderate fragrance. I thought the green leaves & orange flower would be a nice offset to the purple leaves of the plum tree.

I don't know that you would have a major problem ordering from U.S. sources, though those in Canada are arguably better (e.g.-Palatine). The supplier I've used the most (Sherando Roses in Va.) ceases operations as of June. Roses Unlimited in S.C. has also been good. On the west coast, perhaps Rogue Valley? Although I don't particularly care for bands (which, it appears, is what they do most), I do like the selection & they are THE source for Paul Barden roses.

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong but I've gotten the impression from the rose forum that Canadians cannot order roses from the U.S. I understand that Pickering and Palatine are the sources in Canada that people praise the most. From what I've seen Pickering seems to have a wider variety to choose from.

What climate zone is your garden in? Mme. Alfred Carriere is lovely but it might be too tender for your garden, in our California coastal garden it mildewed so badly I gave it to my neighbor who sprays. Although the Pemberton roses are not old enough to be Old Garden Roses, they are all Old Roses having been introduced in the first third of the 1900's. "Cornelia" is a fine rose that is also somewhat shade tolerant. Any rose grown in a tree must be shade tolerant, especially if the rose re-blooms after the trees' foliage grows out in spring. Climbing "Cecille Brunner' is also marvelous, sweetly scented rose called the "Sweetheart Rose" and for a long time used as wedding flowers between 1880's-1940's, if my grandmothers memory is correct. I've seen one in a local nursery an "everblooming" climbing form that was introduced sometime around 1980 or 1990's. My grandmother grew that rose in Seattle in the 1940's and it was the first rose I fell in love with. Lux

Florence, think about Renae. It is thornless (or supposed to be, mine actually has a few), has pretty pink blooms and is supposed to be very fragrant. It overwintered very well in my zone. I planted a band of it last summer (late summer, i think) and in that short time, it grow 10 feet up and almost over an arbor. It's quite vigorous. I can't tell you much about the blooms as this year should be its first blooms. I did see it at a public garden and it was really beautiful. "I don't see how you even get the rose into the soil beneath a tree. Most trees have roots that would make it hard if not impossible to dig underneath them...don't they?" You are correct: you can't plant a rose directly under a tree. That's one reason you need a big rose that can support itself with stout canes, because you don't plant it next to the tree, you plant it out of the direct root zone but under the canopy. Getting a rose to grow up a tree can take a long time and requires a rose that is already growing well. Roses do not do well in the shade and will never overcome a tree if entirely in the shade. Notice that I stated I will plant my 'Long John Silver' by a Yew. The Yew is a multi-stemmed large shrub that grows slowly into a tree. I will plant the rose on the south side so it gets enough sun to power it up the tree. As already mentioned, it can be successful to start the tree and the rose together so that neither over powers the other. I tried this with a rambler and a lilac which, again, makes a large shrub rather than a tree. I should have given the lilac a head start as the rambler is overpowering it already. Other shrubs I am using to support ramblers are Prunus maritima (Beach Plum) and Myrica pensylvanica, the Northern Bayberry. Both these shrubs are slow growing so need a head start before planting the rambler.

I have two growing into trees right now, with two more planned. Paul's Himalayan Musk Rambler is planted at the base of a mulberry tree, and he's having trouble staying in the tree. His canes are lax and thorny, and they tend to go up the tree then hang down as soon as they have the opportunity. I don't think I would try this again with this rose. My other tree climbing rose is American Pillar, which is happily scaling a Virginia Cedar tree. As of now, in its fourth year, it is at least 25' into the tree and continuing to climb. The hot pink flowers spill from the tree's canopy in May and it is certainly a sight to see! My next tree climbers will be Veilchenblau and Tausendschoen, together, to climb a ratty wild cherry tree in my front mixed rose border. I've never seen Tausendschoen in a tree, but Robert grows his Veilchenblau into a holly tree (along with Fortuniana) and the effect is stunning! My best advice on how to get started is to plant the rose on the upwind side of the tree if you can. My American Pillar had to be planted on the south side of its cedar tree, and sometimes the canes that are just beginning to climb get blown out of the canopy. Most of the Wichuranas that I can think of are happier crawling along the ground instead of climbing trees. I'll bet Albertine is stiff enough to be a good tree climber. Connie

i don't know if you get out to the lower mainland much, but i only get my roses from select roses in langley. brad jalbert is the grower and hybridizer and his quality is the best around this area. very knowledgable and a great family run business

There's also Hortico in Canada. Paul's Himalyan Musk is another hardy rambler. Very fragrant, light pink.

I have limited experience with Hortico, having just ordered & received 2 plants (canary bird & captain john ingram), however based on this I'm not sure I'd recommend them as the canary bird looks like it may or may not survive (from the get go) and the captain john looks a little better.

I've gotten 3 plants from Pickering this Spring, which all look to be in good shape,

A neighbor has a Climbing Cecile Brunner growing up a tree. It's light pink, fragrant, nearly thornless and I think it is gorgeous. It's also available in Canada.

Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up getting an Albertine from Brentwood Bay Nursery near Victoria. My daughter went to Select Roses in Langley, (thanks for the lead, Joebar) and they put her on to this other place because all their stock was gone. I didn't realize you should order your roses way back in January! This was the last one and they had to go to the back 40 to get it! I'm hoping the Albertine will be a good choice - does anyone have experience with this? When I googled it the only negative seemed to be that it "might" be prone to mildew if you grew it in too dry a condition. What do you do about mildew?
