My secret compost bin

I'm usually in the garden junk forum, but this is a soil-related experience I wanted to share. I hope you don't mind. :)

Yesterday I was busy potting loads of annuals when I ran out of potting soil. I remembered the window well on the side of the house where all the autumn leaves end up. At least 15 years worth of autumn leaves. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I knelt down and moved aside last years' leaves and dug in with my trowel. Heaven! It was full of rich, black, fluffy compost soil - and worms. I used it to pot the remaining flowers.

I didn't think just plain leaves would result in such nice compost.

Just wish I had more window wells.

Has anyone else found unexpected compost?
