Can a frost kills ash seedlings?

I collected many white ash seeds the last automn and they have germinated recently and grew above the ground, and there will be a frost in the next days.

What could be the minimal temperature it can support?

Spring is very soon this year. It still could snow a bit.

They should be OK down to -1 or -2, but anything below that I would think might kill them. Can you cover the area with some horticultural fleece or similar?

it depends where you germinated them ...

if they are indoor plants.. they might not appreciate what mother nature can do to them.. if they are NOT properly hardened off ..

if they have been out there all winter.. then they should be able to handle it all ... a cover.. as resin noted.. sure wouldnt hurt

You did not say which plants your seedlings reperesent. Tropicals?.... The very cold hardy species will probably survive tomatoes, peppers squach pprobably will not survive. YOU ARE THE ONE THAT CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. in the mean time start new seeds.

I forgot to put the tops back on my sprouts last night..(something about being knackered after digging and turning all day and 15 minutes in the hot-tub with a glass of Pinot). Anyhow, to my shock, we had a good frost last night. I checked on them at 6:30 when I got up..gently touched some leaves, and they were stiff! The surface of the soil was hard frozen. What did I do! Planticide! So, I ran around covering them all up, (like what good would that do), but, I figured the morning sun would warm them up quicker with the tops on. Checked them out at 11:00 am, and !!! they were fine! Sprouted basil got some blue spots on the leaves, but everything else (at least 30 containers) had not turned into cooked spinach. Yeah! Decided not to put them through that again overnight..so I put the tops back on before I 'tubbed' it!

I LOVE ash trees. Open grown specimens have massive low branching trunks and many of them branches are as large as any maple. Add in excellent yellow to purple fall color and you got a winner. Then the white ash supplies wood for baseball bats. Even w/o the dreaded EAB they're not a tree for smaller lots. Mine were planted too close to my home, grew over it and one needed removed. Throw in the threat of EAB killing every white or green ash in the infection zone and I'd limit my ash planting to tree lines or where if it dies 20 years from now I'm not leaving a liability for the next owners of my house. If you got a place to stick them though I absolutely love mine. The large red tree in the background is a white ash. The yellow tree over my house is another This "U" shaped leaf scar is the only way I know to tell green and white ash apart The wide spreading tree on the left is another white ash. It has out lived that silver maple on the right which started rotting out from the bottom. I'll have to get some more "naked ash tree" pics this winter. I'm amazed by their heavy wide spreading branches.

Frost damaged seedlings -- remove or let be?

I lost a bunch one night (about a third) because I had them in my mini-greenhouse and was too darned lazy to bring them in. They mostly looked like cooked spinach the next day. I kicked myself roundly. Several made it. I sent them off to my dad's real greenhouse, albeit unheated. Another hard freeze and they were toast. I have about 3 survivors from the beginning and they look nasty. Luckily I started a bunch more seed and they look great. I got off to a late start last year, as the seed order was a bit late in arriving. Still by the end of summer they were monsters and I was getting ripe fruit from them. So I am not too worried about starting over late this year because I know they can still do it. I was told once that a seedling that experiences stress can come back even stronger for it. I just don't know about THIS kind of stress.

I have put the seeds the last fall into some pots with soil and leaved it outdoor all the winter. The last week, I saw the green seedlings appears.

Spring is soon and we got some unusual warm days for april. It could easily drops to -5Â°C the night until mid-may (forecast -2 for wednesday). It's why I was wondering if a tree seedling can handle it. If not, then it means that a lot a seedlings into the forest could be kill because spring came soon?

Probably a lot in the forest do die in late frosts - remember a tree produces seeds by the hundred thousand, and in nature, only one in its entire life needs to live to replace it!

But also seeds in a pot are liable to sprout earlier as the pot warms up more on a sunny day than the ground does, so promoting premature germination.

Finally, the seedlings are damaged (cotyledons becoming white) with temperatures under 10-12Â°C (50-54Â°F).
