I saw a stunning red rose in front of a town home near the Met. It fit the tight space very well. I think that it is Red Cascade, but am not sure. Brooklyn Botanic Garden has several spetacular, fully-grown Dublin Bay climbers, but that rose might be too big for you. I grow both Blaze Improved and Don Juan. BI's bloom last longer, but the blooms are not particulary pretty and resmeble double knockouts in color and shape. DJ has big, silky and very fragrant blooms. However, DJ gets a lot more blackspot than BI here in my garden. DJ has a upright growth habit, while Blaze will through out canes in all directions, which might annoys the neighbor. My guess is that you might want to avoid BI. BI is a work horse in terms of giving out blooms, while DJ is stingierw with repeats. My plants are very young (2-year old), so maybe someone around area know from first hand experience how they do once they are mature. BTW, if you do like BI, get Blaze Improved, not Blaze as BI has better repeat, or so I heard.

Last year, the squirrels only ate the tomatoes (but not the cherry tomatoes), watermelon, and canteloupe. I did not notice that birds or cats messed with the garden at all. We didn't have most anything that bunnies would even like last year but this year we will have carrots, lettuce, spinach, etc that I am pretty sure they will think I set out a buffet for them. No groundhogs around here I don't think. : ) My advice is to make plans for how you combat them IF they become a problem, but go ahead and just get started now. I don't know where in zone 6 that you are, but it is already time for us to have out peas, carrots, beets, radish, spinach and within a week or two need to have out our onions, lettuce, broccoli, followed shortly by cauliflower. Below is a pic of how you could setup your garden. Most of the day it should get good sun as sun rises in the east and sets west. Late afternoon, the trellis would shade the garden. Which might work out to your advantage if you want to extend the season for lettuce and such. Be sure to leave room to get around the back side of your trellis. Good idea for the long bed with trellis to be only 3 feet wide so you can easily reach into the center and not have to worry about reaching the area blocked by the trellis from that side. Hey Eric.. I am sorry that I seem to be the first to respond.. the year round green request has me stumped.. wisteria is a great plant and will flower after a year or two...or more.. worth the wait.. trumpet vines are good looking... and clematis are a nice vine not sure it would fit you needs.. there are some evergreens that grow tall and will climb fences... shame on me that the name isn't coming to mind.. have some fun .. and enjoy the trip.. every season in a garden can be fun... hope someone else gets in here to give you the "real Info" Enjoy !!! the home site sounds grand... color me green

Hi Blessedbe, I am so glad you are joining this great past-time. The one most important thing I found about sewing is to have an area where you do not feel as though you are in anyone's way. I enjoy a private setting where I can relax and create as I see fit. I now have space where I don't have to put everything away each time I work but I do try to stay as neat as possible. Everything has a place and things are easier to find that way. Everyone probably has a slightly different layout but whatever works well for you. I would add that a comfy chair is very important. An older seamstress once told me...."You have to get your nest right." I have been sewing for over 53 years and STILL loving it. ENJOY!
