Thanks Labrea, for those wonderful pictures of perfect blooms with such defined, many petals. That's the prettiest bloom of Zeph.D. and others that I have ever seen.

My guess is either you have very fertile clay soil, or use really good fertilizer .... I love the effect it has on your blooms.

Anyone who follows the Container Gardening board here knows that much of the discussion about pine bark fines is regarding where to find the damn stuff. Obviously it is not easy to find for most people, and it is not available in most big box stores. The pine bark mulch sold in most big box stores is not fines. Most the discussion on the Container gardening forum stems from the fact that most people don't even know what they are looking for, even know what bark fines are despite all the info available about them on the web. And yes I know that the bags of pine mulch sold in the big box stores is not the same thing. Pine bark fines are not sold outside in the mulches section. They are sold inside the section devoted to starting seeds and growing plants. In the Lowe's here, just there yesterday, they are inside on the shelves next to the exotic plants section where the big containers, container plants, cactus mix, the violet mix, the perlite, vermiculite, decorative container gravel etc. is located. At Home Depot, in both of them here, they are just outside the door into the gardening section (not with the bags of mulches), the section on the shelves next to the super sized containers and the similar exotic soils and mixes. Masha, your roses are always lovely! My favorite today is definitively SDLM. What an awesome bloom. Seeing your photo makes me really want to have this rose. She is on my wish list already! Francis Dubreuil is also stunning. What a beautiful bloom! The color reminds me of the finest dark red velvet. My ORGs and Austin roses are almost all resting in the summer heat, except one or two blooms on my Zephirine Drouhin. That makes seeing your photos an even bigger feast! Thanks for posting!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaw look at the lil egg!!! Kristi I had no idea you had birds!!! I love birds... long story short, as a boy growing up on a farm in PA, I was sad to see so many of our beautiful game birds shot every year during hunting season so I put up "No trespassing" signs everywhere and even called the cops of a few hunters who came onto our farm. So I began raising quail, pheasants and of course, ducks (we had a lot of ponds). To this day the farm is a refuge and in 5 years of raising, collecting eggs, hatching them (I had an incubator, for those smarty pants out there) and rearing all the young, I managed to grow a family of ducks 5000 strong. The only expense I had were the incubators and their use and seed to plant crops just for my birds. I loved them so much and to this day, we still have families that come back every year to rear their young too. Birds rock... Is it any wonder why i became a pilot? :oD Keep me posted, Kristi!!!!! I got the mamm luethyi a few years back on ebay non-grafted...however, while I don't know for sure I really think they were collected from the wild so I was very upset when I received the plants - they looked too large to have been seed grown. I unknowingly helped to support the illegal collection of plants from their habitats. I make sure to take extra special care of that plant because I now know that it is not readily available on it's own roots. But as you can see from the photos I think the plant is happy and hence so am I. I've heard they root easily from cuttings, so you could buy a grafted plant and take some cuttings off of it. I've also seen seed available if you have some patience.

Jan I was speaking to Sarah the other day about the mystery rose of Waretown probably being Renoncule Violette. Other roses not yet bloomed. Madame Joseph Bonnaire, Madam Wagram, Munstead Wood, SDLM Rouge, Leonie's Appoline & Marie de St Jean.

Superlative is the only word I can think of, Joe, for your roses and the photography. My Bourbons are mildewed this spring and look nothing like your beauties, except for Romaggi Plot Bourbon. I would LOVE to see a shot of your Leonie's Appoline since I have one, which has been mostly problematic, with only one good bloom every once in a while. I love its color, though. I'll also be curious to see whether your SDLM Rouge looks like my Leveson-Gower, since they're often said to be the same rose.

Those were deeee-lightful.

Bourbons are hopeless here, so it's wonderful to see them grown so well.

Please tell me more about the Canary Island rose. This is way new to me -- and it is, clearly, NOT something I'm ever going to be able to grow here.

Canary Island has been at Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for ages It's espaliered and Reaches about 8 to 9 ft high by
6 wide. The Blooms on a mature established bush are about the size of Madame Hardy.
The current rosarian Sarah had a group of roses propagated with the aim of putting some roses into circulation I believe Burlington Roses was the propagator & they may have a few for sale.
I'm Considering Training it around this Obelisk
