Problem with Kim's Knee High coneflower

I have two Kim's Knee High coneflowers and they are blooming very strangely. Some flowers have few petals, some have none, and the ones that do have all of the petals seem small. Some of the flowers with partial petals also have curling of the petals. The color is fine and the foliage looks good. I have recently read on this forum about a potential disease called asters yellow, but I am not sure if that is the problem. Does anyone have experience with coneflowers acting this way? I have White Swan in the same bed and they are fine. I certainly dont want this to happen to them. I should say that this bed does not get full sun. The coneflowers in this bed are slower to flower as a result(I have other coneflowers growing in full sun that are going gangbusters), but there is no lack of foliage or flower, but maybe the lack of full sun is the problem. I dont know. I am prepared to remove these and replace them with Prairie Splendor if they are diseased. I would love advice from all of the echinacea experts on this forum! Thanks!

Have you noticed that something has been eating on your plants? Maybe the petals have bite marks in them? Leaf hoppers spread the aster yellows disease.

If this plant has flowered correctly in the past, I highly suggest you remove it and trash it. This will help prevent it from spreading to your other plants. Even if it isn't that disease, you will still be getting rid of a bad plant and replacing it with a good one.

That happened to one of my echinacea 'Sundown's last week, but we don't have any rabbits or squirrels in this area, so I am pretty sure it was deer. That same night they ate quite a few buds on my daylilly plants, which they like almost as much as my tulips : ( I have a problem with a couple of mine in one flower bed where the leaves turn almost black. I keep pulling off the affected leaves, but it seems to spread anyway. I've looked at pictures of powdery mildew, but this doesn't look like that. Maybe I can post a pic. of one of the leaves. One of the plants is still putting out new leaves, the other one seems to be putting all of its energy into blooming.

Pink Double Delight is one of the best, if not the best, echinaceas. It has a compact size. It has many blooms, probably more than any other double. It is healthy, winter hardy and can tolerate some partial shade. It also has a unique leaf shape (a smaller, more oval leaf). It is similar to the Razmatazz variety, but has a softer pink color of bloom on a shorter plant. It also holds its blooms very well. The stems will not be falling over or needing staked. The plants look like little neat round mounds. You cannot go wrong with this plant! Trust me. This is a must have plant!

In the same bed, terrene, are two regular looking pink ones. They are nice and tall but look like the regular E. purpurea. I'm going to ask neighbors if they would like to have them. They are growing right up next to my Sundown and I need to move them. I think you might be right about crossing the Big Sky plants with E. Paradoxa. You might get something really special and different. I have a friend who has offered to grow out some of the seeds from my tangerine orange seedling just to see what we get. I'm definitely taking her up on it. Since Paradoxa has been blooming about the same time as this seedling, maybe more crossing has taken place by the bees. You just never know. It's really awful that the voles ate your tall cross. It sounds like a really nice plant and I love the idea of the tall flowers. Linda
