Newbie w/ Winter Damage Question

Hello. I'm new to GardenWeb and am a David Austin and OGR enthusiast from zone 5, SE Iowa, just coming into my second year of rose growing. I've learned alot from your posts and have a question I would like to put out. My 18 DA's planted last spring leafed out very early this year due to extraordinarily warm temps in Feb. and Mar...then we had a long and brutal cold snap. All the new leaves and many long canes which had survived the winter are now history--I've had to prune several of the shrubs down to a few inches above the ground, notably, Evaline, Glamis Castle, Mary Rose, Eglantyne and Brother Cadfael. Very disapointing, but here's my question: Are these roses permanantly weakened by this die-off, or can I view it as a sort of super-pruning and expect them to flourish as they should in their second year? Time will tell as I compare them with the 10 new DA's and OGR's I've just planted, but I'd love to hear anyone's opinion...
