how do I deadhead for the Lincoln that Monster-Rabbit ate

Hi, everyone, I posted earlier about the Lincoln that Donnie Darko Rabbit ate up (2/3rds of the plant has been eaten). This Lincoln used to have 4 long beautiful stems, clusters and clusters of huge fat lovely leaves and was equal in size to its sibling... 2 long stems have vanished and only 2 are left, both with blooms-- one of which will be spent tomorrow. One stem has been completely stripped of all its leaves; the other stem only 1/4 of its upper leaves are intact... If I try to deadhead, the stem with the 5 cluster leaves, that would leave me with the biggest, fattest healthiest leaves all gone... My once lush 2yr old entire plant would end up nearly as short as my youngster RU 5 month old rose...when it used to be equal in size to my other Lincoln.

Here are the photos... Photos are very misleading in terms of size... These stems are 2'6" so a lot of "nakedness", poor Lincoln! If you look at the bud picture, which I took a day ago, you can see one of the bare stems in the background. That belongs to the other blossom...

Below the bloom, run your fingers down the peduncle. You'll find a place where there is a natural abcission point.
Right THERE is where your grandma (who never heard of ARS) would snap the dead blooms off.
That's what you should do.

Wait til the petals have fallen, and it's a bit withered, and then see if you don't find that place where the good Lord made it easy to snap off dead blooms.
Do that, and no more, until your rose has a chance to recover from the rabbit attack.

thanks so much Jerijen for the very valuable advice! I hope it won't be too long before my lovely Lincoln can gain back its flush of leaves soon! Poor Lincoln! Bad monster rabbit!

I have always gardened by benign neglect and had great results. Never deadheaded my knockouts before last year and they were stunning. They did get to big and I did need to prune them back after checking out how and when to do so. But last year a "friendly" helper went and deadheaded all my knockouts while i was having surgery. After that they never really bloomed much the rest of the season. Now I have some knockouts on standards and they are looking terrible. They are not self cleaning like they should and I'm so sad. A Gardener told me they are not behaving because of the beatles ! Ahah ! I have always dusted with 7-dust early season and then gone happily about my neglect. This year I forgot to 7-dust ! The beatles are making a mess of them..... so possibly fellow gardeners, the beatles are stressing the roses into not self cleaning ??? In this case, I will have to get off my duff, slay the beatles, deadhead and get them back in shape for next year's "dust and neglect" program.

I am so glad you got one GDF too, :-) and your Polar Ice looks huge, it's way over a band size. I hope you didn't pay a lot since they ordered from High Country Rose, and they have to make some profit as a business. I paid $14.95 each for 2 ramblers( GDF and Victorian Memory), and $16.95 for a DA rose band (Tess of the d'Urbervilles), the shipping for 3 rose bands is $18.95. We have 2 "sister" GDFs here since yours and mine are both from High Country Rose, let's see who's grows faster. :-) Will that be fun!? :-) When you're ready to start, just let me know, mine is still in pot, not sure where to put it yet.

hee-hee, NewYorkRita, I was actually going to post how much I love! the pruning and deadheading process... but then I saw your post... I always think it's a miracle when I see tiny bud stems break straight up from where I had cut... It seems Lincolns can take a lot of drastic pruning, and because they're so vigorous they will keep sending new branches and stems... From reading your post and numerous ones about the naked legs, I decided to always go the major chopdown way...Even on the bush that Monster Rabbit ate (it ate over 2/3rds of my once beautiful well-proportioned, full, not lanky young rose)... I still cut back the stalk significantly after my long-stalked rose finished blooming... My Aromatherapy rose likewise ended up being the notorious Lincoln stalky, so I did the drastic cuts/prunes, and it has a nice "bushy" shape instead... granted it can be a bit painful to hack/slash and live on faith that it will send out new stems, but ML always does...

Wow, no local rules about the junk or the loose animals? When you asked for a fast screen I immediately thought of my lonicera sempervirens which grows 15' every summer and stays green until frost. There are so many tendrils and vines that it easily obscures in the winter as well. Also may consider red twig dogwood? Both are native and attractive. Maybe ilex opaca as well? The flowers attract many pollinators and the leaves are thorny. This may not be an appropriate suggestion but it would be cheaper than a fence! Osage orange--used by farmers as living fences to contain and protect their livestock because of the massive thorns. Apparently useful for other things as well. Would rsearch this thoroughly! Keep us posted as to your decision.
