Mr Lincoln the one cane wonder rose.

I have two Mr Lincoln roses. One of them is a one cane wonder, no sign of any basel breaks or another shoot comeing up. I bet it stays that way all summer. Thats what happened last year. The other Mr Lincoln has many canes and while I would never call the habit of this HT anything but skinny, it looks good. Lots of buds coming on the shoots.

Ok, your thinking, this is not so unusual for Mr Lincoln. Except that last year the nice full one was the one cane wonder and the one cane wonder last year is the nice full one now.

I think I am going to dig one of them up (yes, now) and plant them together side by side in the same planting hole. I don't like one cane wonders and maybe I can fool myself into thinking I have a nicely filled out rose there.

Hi Rita, My Mr. L has looked alot better in past years, too. This year, it's rather scrawny with just a few buds. More than one cane, but just barely. sigh. I need to find a better fragrant red. I had another Mr L that died on me once before. If this one doesn't rebound, I won't replace it. I am really interested in Love's Promise as my next fragrant red HT. Even at it's best. Mr, L is very unreliable!!

I agree with Rochesterroseman-perhaps combining the two plants is a great idea NewYorkrita--I could almost do the same thing as my two plants at different points in the garden are doing next-to-nothing.(!)How did this guy get such good PR in my neck of the woods? I wonder sometimes how they rate roses and how they could determine if one might survive weather changes with or without cpr. One cane wonder here, too.

Charleney, I'm sorry to hear about your illness and ailing roses and hope you are both better soon. First thought here is that you might not have done your roses a favor by putting coffee grounds on them. I once did that to a healthy azalea and it _suffered_ very noticeably. If you want to use coffee grounds, I'd suggest doing it only for plants in the ground where its impact would be less concentrated, and also not putting very much at all at one time on any one plant. I know I've seen threads where people rave about coffee grounds on roses, but I'd go easy, easy on that, given what I know for sure its impact was on my azalea. I may have overdone the coffee grounds thing here when I tried it; perhaps just a thin scatter thrown out once or twice a year would have caused no harm at all. Anyway, you might consider scraping off some or most of the coffee grounds if what you put there was a heavy application. Grs An Aachen will do well even without enough sun, so your overcast weather is probably not responsible for its problems. It's a little leggy with too much shade, but nothing like a one-cane thing, and still very healthy. And the cold probably doesn't account for its problems either unless your winter was a lot worse than ours was; all three of our GrÃ¼ss An Aachens have been absolutely cane hardy here with temperatures down to 11, 12, 13 degrees this exceptionally cold winter. They look wonderful now and I already see at least one flower bud. I don't know what MMM clone is, but would guess that just making sure the soil has a good organic component in its composition would be all that you'd need to do if it's acidic enough. We had something like your problem happen here when a rose was planted in a spot that was elevated but not nearly enough for our low clay soil in that area of the yard, given the unusually wet year we had last year. With really wet soil starting just maybe 8-10 inches down, there's so little dirt at a level where the roses' roots can function that the rose doesn't have the strength to send up a normal number of canes. Perhaps your wet weather was a problem because the growing spot is less than ideally elevated for good drainage in wet times? If that's the problem, just getting the roses into a well-drained pot situation ought to fix them up very soon, if you don't do anything to the soil in the pot to stress the roses further. Of the two roses we had in an insufficiently elevated spot, the one ailing the most recovered quickly as soon as it was moved to a pot with nothing more than normal organic materials incorporated into the dirt. However, the one that seemed less threatened didn't get moved right away, and with one thing and another, we didn't get around to moving it until a couple of months later, after it was too late. But the one we moved quickly enough recovered beautifully and survived the winter in perfect condition. It looks wonderfully healthy now. Fingers crossed for you now that you have that good luck with yours too! Best wishes, Mary P.S. You can always trim them later, after the roses recover, if you want to shape their form then.

I wish I could get some more guineas. They cleaned my yard of Japanese beetles, grasshoppers and other pesky insects. Darned coyotes, and neighbor's dogs got them, one by one. Right now the JB are eating holes in my beautiful white hardy Hibiscus flowers and Seashell Cosmos. Yesterday I sprayed with some Ortho organic spray and I found a lot of them dead soon after, but that stuff is expensive as all get out and doesn't go very far. Ten bucks to spray three or four plants if just too rich for my blood. I am going to mix up some homemade organic spray and try that. I also have been squishing JB when I see them. I figure that every one I kill prevents thousands more from ever hatching. They are easy to squish and I get kind of a sadistic pleasure from it. If only getting rid of the dumb asses in Congress were that easy... Grasshoppers are chewing up my Canna lily leaves. Just a few holes really, but darn it. I catch as many as I can to feed to the hens. They love 'em. My grandsons think it is great sport! Another side note: I have killed a total of nine of those Asian Longhorned beetles now. While I was up in the vegetable garden watering the other day, I saw one come flying down into the yard from up on the hill. He flew right into my vegetable garden in front of me. I knock him to the ground in flight and then squished it with the end of the water hose. Take that! Haven't seen any new ones, but I will keep vigil. Glenda, Yes I am going to try to root some Mr. Lincoln roses. I have pretty good success in rooting roses. Some roses root easier than others, but it's worth a try. Right? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Jim, I keep my ML cut to about 3 feet. Blooms are produced on the new canes, so every cut produces more canes and more blooms. The trick is knowing when & where to prune. I have a Peace rose that needs some severe pruning. It has gotten leggy and leafless at the bottom. It's kind of scary to do, but I will be rewarded with a healthier, more beautiful rose bush when I do. I should never have let in get that big in the first place. Here's a trick I learned about old climbing roses that have gotten leggy and have stopped producing many blooms: Put on leather gloves to do this. Take it off the trellis and carefully lay it down on the ground. It will almost immediately start making side branches. Leave it for a couple of months and then tie it back up on the trellis. You will be rewarded with tons of blooms and a bushier climber. I learned this from an old, old rose gardening book published in the 1930s. It's a great book. Black and white images, but very detailed instructions and explanations and lots of photos showing everything from grafting, to pruning, to you name it. How to do everything regarding roses. I've got to go move my America rose to a sunnier location. It was in full sun in the spring, but now is mostly in shade, so not growing and not blooming. It is healthy though. John, You may very well be right that the crosses you mention are not actually "wide" crosses. The information I listed came from internet searches and I missed any information about the Acidanthera being reclassified as a Gladiolus. There were other crosses listed that I'd consider "wide" crosses. As for Pardancanda this is information I found by David Joyce, Associate Professor, Clark University: "A note on Pardanthopsis - Rodionenko classified the Vesper Iris, Iris dichotoma, as the sole member of the subgenus Pardanthopsis. In 1967 Samuel Norris crossed it with the Blackberry Lily, Belamcanda chinensis, and began a strain of fertile intergenus hybrids sometimes called Candy Lilies. (The Vesper Iris and the Blackberry Lily had long ago been recognized as similar plants, and in the nineteenth century were even put together in the genus Pardanthus by some authorities.) In 1972 Lenz elevated Pardanthopsis to the level of genus and placed the Vesper Iris in it as P. dichotoma. He put the Candy Lilies in the hybrid genus Pardacanda and named them X Pardacanda norrisii in honor of Norris. This is essentially Rodionenko's classification with Pardanthopsis elevated to a genus. Genus Pardanthopsis (P. dichotoma, Vesper Iris) Genus Belamcanda (Blackberry Lilies) Hybrid genus Pardacanda (Pardanthopsis X Belamcanda; P. norrisii, Candy Lilies)" As to how wide a cross this is, I don't know. So I got my hands on Mister Lincoln this year and it's growing a lot in the all day sun. I have a huge problem with sun scorch on the blooms. They start out fine, but as soon as they start to open up, by the end of the day, they're toast. Mine are in pots on their own roots. Peak temps are about mid 90s with humidity. I've done my best to give them plenty of water, but it still happens. I can see from Cody's pics they don't mind a lot of sun, so I'm not sure what my problem is. Is it because they're so young? Should I move them, or wait for them to mature more?

I have one huge bloom of Mister Lincoln in our family room right now and the fragrance fills the room. I have many reds including some that are more prolific and some old ones like Proud Land, Grand Master, Red Master, Ingrid Bergman, Legend, Royal Canadian, Olympiad and quite a few more I can't think of. My ML is a giant and the biggest of them all in both the size of the bush and the bloom size but it is really my favorite red because of that fragrance.

Henryinct, I would love to see a picture of your Mr. Lincoln rose bush. I have never seen one that I would describe as impressive to look at. Do you have a digital camera? Take a picture of the whole plant! thank you.

Maddening - I'm one of the ones where Mr. Lincoln just limps along, but my first one-cane wonder would spew out the most gorgeous flowers and then it died. So now I have another one limping along, and also a second one where I am crossing my fingers as it seems to be doing better (more canes). On the other hand, my Mirandy indifferently shrugs off any conditions and spews out a bunch of loose garnet flowers and grows over 6 feet - go figure, the bushes are all in the same garden.

hee-hee, NewYorkRita, I was actually going to post how much I love! the pruning and deadheading process... but then I saw your post... I always think it's a miracle when I see tiny bud stems break straight up from where I had cut...

It seems Lincolns can take a lot of drastic pruning, and because they're so vigorous they will keep sending new branches and stems... From reading your post and numerous ones about the naked legs, I decided to always go the major chopdown way...Even on the bush that Monster Rabbit ate (it ate over 2/3rds of my once beautiful well-proportioned, full, not lanky young rose)... I still cut back the stalk significantly after my long-stalked rose finished blooming... My Aromatherapy rose likewise ended up being the notorious Lincoln stalky, so I did the drastic cuts/prunes, and it has a nice "bushy" shape instead... granted it can be a bit painful to hack/slash and live on faith that it will send out new stems, but ML always does...

I can't say that I much like pruning, I just like the results of pruning as my roses grow much shrubbier. That and stronger stems.

I just realised that I have a big flaw in my plan to dig up my Mr Lincolns. They are in bloom. When I see those beautiful flowers, I remember why I don't just shovel prune them both.
