Tsugas canadensis and allelopathy

A friend of mine is speculating that a nearby mature hemlock is exuding "poison" that is detrimental to the rear side of her Picea pungens 'Fat Albert'. Wasn't hemlock a poison of choice in Shakespeare?

Albert is definitely not doing well on the rear Hemlock-facing side, but I suspect that lack of sunshine is involved and possibly some deer damage too. It is on the deer path.

The two trees are about 15'-20' apart.

I found an article about Tsuga having a moderate allelopathic affect on seed germination, but nothing more signficant, as in Black Walnut juglone.

Thoughts?
