Need Pruning Advice for Vintage Band

This is a HT Cl. RoseMarie that I got from Vintage a few weeks ago.

It had a nasty looking top, but everything was green, and it even had two buds.

A limb has since turned yellow, and I dont know if I should prune the main trunk down a couple inches (leaving two
healthy limbs - one on each side)

I can't figure out how to upload multiple images to one post, so additional shots will follow as follow-ups.

The two healthy limbs appear on the lower right in the above photo. The center cane is not long for this world.
And the healthy leaves on the lower left, are attached to a "browning" cane.

I don't know if I should prune only the center (brown and yellow) cane, a wait to see if the bottom left turns the same brown and yellow before pruning it. Or Should I trim the main trunk to just above the two healthy limbs a few inches down?

I would venture to guess most people prune because they were told to (ditto with cleaning every bit of dead or dying matter from their gardens). I find that since I branched off into growing food (fruit trees and vegetables) I've learned SO much more about roses than when I only grew roses. The "teachers" I've benefited most from (apart from my fruit trees and edible crops) include Tony Kienitz of Vegetare (an edible landscape company), author of "The Year I Ate My Yard" who also teaches/speaks on occasion, Steve Solomon's "Gardening When It Counts" and John Warner, a former ag teacher in Orange County who market gardens organically and supports several people on about 1.5 acres (link to his website below). There's also the Dervaes family in Pasadena (http://www.pathtofreedom.com/) also making a living market gardening on at most 1/4 acre but while they garden intensively Solomon explains in his book the benefits of spacing plants out giving them alot of room, especially in dry climates, to establish deep, wide root systems that survive "dry farming" (or water rationing, economic crises, etc.). Slow growth has advantages over fast so pushing plants with fertilizers and excess water can lead to their early deaths or at least disease. John Warner is my latest find, his message of "less is more" echos what is written in the Vintage newsletter. Sometimes if we "hear" the same message in different words or from a different angle we "get it" - our time is better spent bringing things into the garden to mulch with (coffee grounds from Starbucks, neighbors lawn clippings or bags of leaves, horse manure from a local stable) than hauling things out to make everything look like Disneyland (I've never seen a wood or forest "tidy"). Oh, dear, I hope that Archduke Charles recovers, Daun! Most likely, it's from my plant that I propagated from my friend Vivian's childhood home. It was built in the late 1850s, burned in the 1960s, but there are still a few old roses there that we believe were planted in Victorian times. I have both Archduke Charles and Cels Multiflora from that old garden,and they are remarkably vigorous. I'm going to go against most advice here. I'd fertilize it with half-strength liquid fertilizer every other week, and see if you can nudge some new growth. Be sure the pot is watered before you add the fertilizer. I could have sworn that we had nothing but one-gallon and bigger roses for sale at the cemetery this year. I keep my new roses along my driveway, where they get at least half a day of strong sun. I think that sun and air circulation are essential to growth and disease reduction. In Sacramento, where it's usually so darned hot, I worry about cooking the roots in black nursery pots. I have some long plastic planters, and put four one-gallons in each, with some mulch at the bottom and around the pots, to keep them cooler. I also mulch the top of all of my babies. I fertilize them all, twice a month. Daily watering can lead to quite a wet zone in the bottom few inches of the pot, although setting them on the mulch acts as a wick (roots often grow through). Elaine, we have one very gifted propagator among our volunteers who is wonderful at nursing plants back to life. We call her yard the "neonatal nursery!" We had a lot of problem with mildew and rust this year. Jeri, the rust is on the bottom AND top of the leaves. Yuck. We think it's due to the cool weather. And a word about Comtesse du Cayla - mine at home is much bigger than the Perle d'Or that I planted next to it at the same time. It is huge, and does indeed respond to heat. Blooms in the spring and fall hold up, but the flowers crisp up in the summer sun. The one in the cemetery is in a low spot that tends to flood when we water it once a week. Its flowers hold up better than mine at home, where I water sparingly. I'm not willing to give it more water, so am thinking about replacing it. Anita

Hi Judith: Muriate of Potash is potassium chloride, salt index of 116.2, very high, that's the stuff we use to de-ice in zone 5a winter. I would not use that stuff on any plants. Sulfate of potash has salt index of 43, NPK 0-0-50, plus the sulfate part which makes it more water soluble. The safest potassium with no salt would be chop-up banana peels soaked in water. Banana peels NPK is 0-3-42. MiracleGro Moisture Control potting soil (blue bag) already has slow-released fertilizer for 3-months, no need for additional fertilizer. What it doesn't have is calcium, essential for root-growth. I put granular gypsum bought from Menards on top of my roses ... after 1 month of spring rain, that didn't dissolve. Gypsum is 22% calcium, and 17% sulfur, but it varies with brand .. some brand contains less sulfur, and never get dissolved. The soluble gypsum from Kelp4Less dissolved easily in my tap water, pH 8, so I suspect there's more sulfur % in that one. The instant green-up and deepening of bloom colors most likely is from the sulfur %. I would dissolve the gypsum you bought from the feed store at the rate of 1 tablespoon per gallon, if it doesn't dissolve, then is best used in the ground. Roses Unlimited recommends mixing in 1 cup of gypsum in the planting hole. If the gypsum you bought from the feed store still doesn't dissolve, I would put less than 1 tablespoon of vinegar per gallon ... any more roses will wilt in the heat. Putting vinegar in the heat is risky, less is best. So far 4 studies pointed to calcium and extra potassium as essential in best root-growth: U. of Kentucky with Peters 20-10-20, same with U. of Mass with marigolds. Two additional studies: one with hydroponic lettuce, with the best result Masterblend 20-18-38 with added calcium nitrate and magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). This was done hydroponic, no soil, thus the logic for Epsom salt. Another experiment is done by Ohio Link NTD center on New Guinea impatient flowers. Here's the tested ones: Peters-water-soluble 20- 4.4 -16 Daniels-soybean-base 10- 1.8 -2.5 Osmocote 3-month release 15-4-10 5-month slow-release 15-4-10 The best performance is Peters-water-soluble (NPK 20-4.4-16). The worst performance is organic soybean base, too little potassium. Potassium mobility is a 3, somewhat mobile, and gets leached out. Potassium is essential for root growth, that's the only extra fertilizer one needs besides calcium for best root growth. MiracleGro potting soil has plenty of nitrogen, I get a gigantic dark-green Excellenz von Schubert from a band, I had to chop off 2 feet of growth, before planting in ground. The safest bet: chopped up banana peels soak in water for potassium, and gypsum powder at 1 tablespoon per gallon (low salt index of 8). Plus MiracleGro Moisture Control potting soil (blue bag), which already have slow-released fertilizers. Less fertilizer is best for young bands. Make sure (I don't know this for a fact) that even if your accounts aren't linked, if your debit card account is overdrawn by something fraudulent that the bank won't take funds out of your other accounts to cover it. I would think you could recover that, but I've heard nightmare stories of problems with debit card fraud recovery, vs pretty painless recovery for problems with credit cards. Like others have said, you can only be held liable for $50 of fraudulent charges on a credit card, which is almost always waived unless you did something like let the fraud continue after you knew about it. The rest of any loss would be on the bank/credit card company. That's why they call you about any suspicious charges on a card...not to protect YOU but to protect THEM. If they don't reach you, they can just freeze the card so there are no more charges until it's straightened out. I use my debit card on an account that carries a high balance because it's interest bearing and pays way more interest than I can get for cash anywhere else. But I have to make 10 debit transactions per month to receive the high interest. I only use it at stores I trust, like my food co-op, Starbucks, Tj's and maybe the bird food store. Never at gas stations or restaurants or online. I think using a debit card many places is playing with fire. Much more dangerous than linking a credit card to paypal.

Well, I think, if it were ME, I'd cut off the dying cane, pray that you find healthy tissue, and seal the pruning cut. But I'm not where you are -- so others may have more pertinent advice.

In my weather, I'd cut off all of the bad, yeah, since it sounds like a creeping sort of problem. Spray with a good fungicide and I'd probably pot up in a much bigger pot. Use soil that drains very, very well.

I'd keep her on a spray schedule until she gets more robust. She should :) There's enough green there!

I'd leave a stub and not cut very close to the cane you want to keep. Then if some dieback occurs on the stub, there is some room for safety left.

She's probably just getting used to your local disease pressure. She'll acclimate if you treat her like an infectious patient for a while ;) Keep her on the dry side and in a windy/good airflow spot and not in too much shade. Good luck!

I agree with Jeri and Meredith. It does appear to be a creeping issue and I would want all that creeping crud GONE before it affects any more tissue. I also think I would spray with the fungicide of your choice. Hopefully, it is also effective against downy mildew. I'm not saying that's what you have, but it sure give me that impression. Kim

Yes. My problem is that it looked like downy mildew to me, too. And having given it an hour's thought, I'd grit my teeth and cut.

And hope it doesn't go all the way down to the roots. I did lose roses that way, years ago.

Then, I would hope for hot weather.

If it's downy, you are in luck! Late May in Florida (with June on the way) will cure that in a hurry!

Hopefully, this is a larger close - up.

I am really confused about the possibility of this being downy mildew. The leaves don't have a blemish of any kind on them. Google images of downy mildew on stems appears to have a crud on them. These stems are turning yellow, then brown. Is downy mildew the only
possibility? Tomorrow morning I will cut it again down to
a little above the lowest branch and then spray with
Mancozeb and Honor Guard ( the generic for Banner Max) and say a prayer to the Rose Goddess.

This is what it looked like after I pruned off the dead limb this afternoon.

Would Downey Mildew cause the brown ring inside the bark?

What is that area called? Xylem, cambium or phloem?

There are MANY possibilities. There are bacterial diseases which seem to do this -- and I suppose other fungal diseases.

The thing that looks "downy-mildew-like" to me is the reddish-purple blotches on the cane. You do see that with downy mildew. It's caused by the action of the fungus within the plant, and the purple-blotched areas die. But I suppose there could be other causes for that.
