Little Gem magnolia care
Comments (1)Well, they really are NOT indoor plants. If you're in a zone 7 (or even 6b), you could grow them outside (which they would REALLY prefer). Containerized, I would keep them as cool as possible during the winter and put the plant out for the growing season. I don't have a Little Gem but do have (in the ground) Majestic Beauty, Victoria, Edith Bogue, and Greenback (in addition to a few deciduous one)--I love Magnolias! But getting back to your questions, Magnolias require acid soil (lower pH)--you can purchase fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Don't feed at the outdoor rates if you're only growing indoors. Obviously, full sun if you have it. Good luck!...See MoreMagnolia Grandiflora hardy cultivars
Comments (24)I have grown Magnolia grandiflora "Edith Bogue" successfully in Guelph Ontario for 3 years. Planted outdoors in moist clay loam , slightly above grade and acidified by pine bark, peat moss, humus mix as top dressing . Watered regularly in winter thaws with luke warm water to keep surface roots drawing moisture for leaves ( to mitigate wind desiccation/ winter sunburn ) Flowered 3rd year after planting. Now 9ft high ( 8-12 inches /year) . Growing well this spring (2014) after extraordinarily cold winter down to negative 34C for several nights in January/February. Some leaf dessication this year (first time since planted, probably because of very cold winter)) and 25% leaf burn from spring sun (possibly due to late soil thaw this year as sun got stronger), but these leaves will drop anyway as a matter of course to be replaced by new leaves by June 1. New leaf buds already swelling. Also successfully growing Magnolia asheii, Magnolia virginiana "Porcelain Dove ( amazing plant), 2 hardy crape myrtles, 5 hardy camellias, stewartia and franklinia alamataha amongst other rare/ endangered / and zone pushers. All doing well....See MoreCultivars of Magnolia grandiflora and snow load problems.
Comments (1)I have only Little Gem and the non-cultivar standard M.grandiflora. Neither had damage of any type this winter....See MoreWhere to buy magnolia little gem?
Comments (6)This is the time to buy and plant a magnolia tree, as I'm sure you already know. I live on the SW coast of Florida, on the border of zone 9b/10a and have two glorious magnolia trees on my front lawn. One is an Edith Bogue, planted almost three years ago. It was about 15 ft tall when planted and is now a bit over 18 ft. The 2nd magnolia is a Little Gem, planted about 5 yrs ago and is now 12 ft tall and growing,...slowly. ( smile ) I am in a large 55 + mobile home park and these two trees are just about ready to sprout their magnificent 11 - 12 in wide white blossoms with a scent to die for. This intense fragrance and eye popping display will go on till mid June, - here anyway. Most of my neighbors are aware, and as they pass my front lawn on their morning walks, some will even pause, smile and take a whiff as the fragrance easily extends that far. My largest tree, the Edith Bogue is right in front on my screened lanai. Reading a book out there for the next 2 1/2 months will he nirvana,..that's why I was very specific as to where that tree would be planted by the nursery crew. The blossoms should be appearing any day now. I know my Little Gem didn't cost anywhere near $100, but that was awhile ago at Home Depot. My suggestion is to start calling nearby nurseries, HD, Lowes, etc as well as a couple of online nurseries not too far away that will mail one to you. Whatever, - ya need to get a move on,..my Edith Bogue has already had one premature blossom. By the way, discovered early on that I am very close to the southern border where these trees will grow. Going north is not a problem evidently,..a neighbor in New York State has one growing there. Another historic specimen grows on the White House grounds. It was transplanted by President Andrew Jackson from his home in Nashville, Tennessee, in memory of his beloved wife Rachel. You're on the right track, Good luck !...See Moredgs9r
