Serviceberry (Amelanchier 'Autumn Brilliance' is one) would be great but it does not have persistent berries (the birds LOVE them) and over time it would get about 15-20 feet. If you truly don't want something over 10 feet, consider instead a large shrub like Winterberry (Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' is one); it does need a nearby male tree.

An ornamental flowering cherry would not produce berries usually.

Many Crataegus spp are hardy in that zone. I like them a lot.

Or one of the larger viburnums. I really like v. prunifolium (black haw viburnum) and it's more of a small tree even than a large shrub.

For maximum wildlife value plant something native to the region. If serviceberry holds some interest look for A. laevis, it bears remarkably more conspicuous petals than the A. x grandiflora selections I have seen here.

Cotoneaster lacteus ~ (parneyi) - is another one and maybe not as large as black haw V. but in the 10x10 range...not sure if it will actually do well in that zone - maybe ask a nurseryman or Extension Agent. Mine at my house in Sacramento was a great shrub. But I like the V. prunifolium as well, and that with a Crataegus would be really nice.

USDA 8 is the edge for that one.

Crataegus has very persistent fruit, which I guess is another way of saying birds don't care for them. I've seen this on various species grown in the north, and it's pretty common for the fruit to be hanging on throughout winter and into spring. Not an especially desirable trait IMHO.

Birds like Crateagus berries just fine. One might want to think about the benefits of ecological adaptation to long persistence and ripening in spring.

Something is eating them or they wouldn't be reproducing. Persistence varies with kind of hawthorn.

The cranberry viburnum has interesting leaves and beautiful red berries, as well as very nicely formed leaves. It's a gorgeous plant--needs good sun.

Callicarpa americana "American Beauty Berry" or Callicarpa dichotoma "Purple Beauty Berry".

I like calicarpa just fine, but it can be a bit rank when it isn't showing off those berries in late summer. While it's great in a mixed shrub border, it wouldn't be my pick for a specimen plant.

And birds eat hawthorne just as they eat ilex and aronia fruit. They may pick tastier things earlier on, but those persistent astringent fruit are entirely palatable after an extended freeze/thaw cycle, and an important late winter/early spring food source. I think of it as nature's way of making sure the birds save something for later.

Not showy flowers, but great in winter Possumhaw Ilex decidua. Can be tree or shrub, look as though in fall color all winter. Plants are very tough as well. But you wiwll need a male plant, if none are natively nearby.

Another possibility is perhaps crabapple.

I think I want a crabapple. The only problem is finding one that will stay no larger than 12x12. Smaller if possible. I've been researching online, and there are dwarf cultivars. They are just impossible to find at local nurseries. There is 'Coralburst' on Wayside's site, but they are out of stock. Other dwarfs cost five times more to ship than the tree is worth. Does anyone know of a good mail order site with quality trees without brutal shipping charges?

One must be willing to pay for specialty plants, esp in today's world with rising energy prices and carriers looking for every efficiency gain possible.
