What is the best fertilizer for clematis? IYO
Comments (13)I'd like to share an easy way to use the alfalfa pellets. Although we are having a terrible drought right now in normal times we will have a prediction of heavy rain, perhaps even a prediction of 3 days of rain. I try to wait until the sky is dark & rain looks certain, then sprinkle the alfalfa pellets in some of the flower beds. The rain waters them in & makes them into mush (probably helpful for rabbit problems as opheliathornvt says above, tho' I don't have rabbits). When the beds try out a bit I take a hand tool, like my long metal sedge puller, & work in the mushy alfalfa. I work around & do different flower beds with different heavy rains. Easy, done!...See MoreWhat is the best fertilizer program for peonies and fertilizer?
Comments (1)I prefer to maintain my planting beds year around with the addition of finished compost spring and fall. If I had a cow and composted her manure I would use that also when ready. I have never agreed with adding a fast acting chemical fertilizer when I thought the plant needed a boost during the season. Al...See MoreWhat is the best tomato fertilizer?
Comments (3)For the tomatoes you grow in potting mix in containers, no one knows, unless they have done a test of your mix. I buy a cheap "balanced" flower and vegetable mix for my plants in "potting mix", because it would be overkill to have all my containers tested, and I figure some of "everything" is better than nothing, and probably at least as good as a WAG. For those you grow in the ground, neither you or anyone else can know until you have your soil tested. At the present time, I am using 10-10-10 in my containers. I do not claim it is better than any formula recommended above, it was just the "universal fertilizer" my local merchant had. I had no reason to pretend to know more about the contents of the potting mix bag than he did, so I used the "best buy". In my garden, I use only urea, 46-0-0, because a test of the soil by a professional tester told me that is all I need. Of NPK, they tell me N is all I will need, for as long as I live. My garden has enough P and K, that no one will have to add any for years. Even though I know I only need nitrogen every year, I still have a soil sample analyzed every year to tell me how much to add, and whether I need to add sulfur to reduce the pH....See MoreWhat is the best fertilizer to use ??
Comments (26)Much less than the manufacturers suggest. As almost every plant no matter how large has roots no deeper than 300mm (or 12") when there is a lot of extra depth under this I fill it with anything---old buckets, bricks, rubbish soil, plant pots etc. The pots need to be wrapped to stop soil entering via the drainage holes also both these and buckets must of course be upside down. Don't use anything that would rot down. Second tip; why only partly fill pots? You have enslaved them to a life of a smaller amount of soil width, there is always settling and no, they don't need a deep recess "for water". Mine are always planted level with the pot rim. ANY water running from the bottom of pots or hanging baskets has a similar effect to rinsing dirt from washing....See Moremksmth zone 7a Tulsa Oklahoma
