How do you prune own roots?

This is the first year for me with own roots instead of bare roots. There are no canes, just stems. How can I tell where to prune? Or do I? The stems are so thin compared to the canes of bare roots. The rose "Ramblin' Red" has now dropped most of it's leaves because I didn't do what I was supposed to do, harden off before planting. I planted same day as I received it. The stems are a nice green, but not many leaves now. It is going through that transplant shock. I thought maybe I should shorten the stems? They are about 9 inches tall. Maybe that would stimulate growth? I already put the dilute Sea Tea on it last night, but then it rained some. Oh well, I guess it's more dilute now lol. I really don't want to lose this rose and am trying everything I can to keep it. I have heard that there should be more root than stem length to start with, so the rose can work on root growth and not top growth.
