Why we still need roses!
Comments (5)Sorry, Clevelander. If you go to today's Huffington Post's Green Section, it's partway down the column on the left. You can also go to www.huffingtonpost.com/linda-buzzell to see all of my blogs for Huff Post and "Why We Still Need Roses" should be there as well....See MoreGrrrr, I just need to rant - neighbor mowing my yard
Comments (20)You should be able to get a plat map of your property from your county's appraisal district. It is really frustrating when someone damages your property and thinks they're doing you a favor for some strange reason. Try talking to her again and explain - again - why she shouldn't mow your yard. You might also want to contact your city's code compliance department to find out if there is some code that says something about planting a shrub that large right on the property line. Maybe she shouldn't have done that (all right, we all KNOW she shouldn't have done that) according to some city code and maybe they could be removed? Also let them know about how she is damaging your property and see if they can suggest anything that can be done. You have every right to prune those photinias all the way up if you want to since they are hanging over your property. I can't stand those shrubs, especially when they are planted in the wrong space. Obviously right on the property line is the absolute wrong space....See MoreRant - Why do they discontinue good products?
Comments (9)I got a free sample of Bobbi Brown Moisturizing (?) Cream Compact foundation. Didn't think I'd end up liking/using it. Though the samples were available in different shades, it was not available in the lightest one, which I'd assumed I'd need. I got it in the next lightest shade though, which turned out to be a perfect match color-wise. Also, I have oily skin (in the T-zone), so tend to stay away from anything with "moisturizing" in the name. I've been using Stila Illuminating Powder Foundation for a number of years now, and couldn't imagine using anything "heavier" or with more coverage, but free is free! I was very pleasantly surprised. I apply it with a BB makeup brush (travel sized--another freebie I'd gotten years ago, but had never used), and use very, very little of it on the brush. It blends in well, is very lightweight (esp since I use so little), yet evens out skin nicely. I dust over it with some sheer powder foundation and/or translucent setting powder just to mattify it a bit (and absorb any skin oils). I really like it. I tried the oil-free version in the store (no samples) and it didn't look nearly as nice (color match, blending, skin itself--all looked blah). The Moisturizing version seems to hold up very well, and I actually look less shiny throughout the day than when I used the powder foundationn alone. I apply Smashbox's Photo Finish Primer (the Light version) before applying any make-up, which I find helps, too....See MoreDo we really need an iphone? Somewhat of a rant
Comments (43)Old step-uncle, having had three hip operations (same hip, I think) resulting in bad back, hip and leg, had been a beef farmer and, without offspring through two wives, had no need for money ... but had cattle in the barn in his mid-80s. We suggested that he should get rid of them, he said that he'd got rid of most of them, and our reply was that he still had to visit the barn daily, rain/snow of shine, whether he had 2 or 35. When his wife was alive, if he didn't return to the house within an hour or so of choring ... something would start to happen. But on her death, some family were concerned that, were he to fall into a snowbank and be unable to get himself out, which we felt somewhat improbable ... things would be difficult. So I stayed with him for a couple of months following his wife's death, until the cattle went to pasture. We had recommended that he get one of those push-button medical alert systems that work through one's phone, whether push to send a basic message or one where the user could talk to a dispatcher. He got one ... a couple of months prior to his death, a couple of years later. Now ... I rent his house and though the landlord comes and goes to his shop or machines almost daily ... were I to be lying on the floor, needing help ... he wouldn't be aware of it. Being now in my mid-80s, instead of the push-button medical alert, I've been thinking that I should get a basic cell phone to carry with me all the time ... which would allow me to call someone directly in case of need while at home, and while away, as well, and could use for occasional use while out, e.g. call a friend to ask whether they were busy or up for a short visit. ____________________________ By the way ... many seniors have a hip let go ... so are on the floor. If their only phone is on the wall, about 3 and a half feet up ... it might as well be on another planet. I suggest that they get an extension to sit on an end table, at the bedside, etc. so that, if they're confined to the floor, they could crawl to it and pull it down by the cord to be able to use it to summon assistance. Good wishes for a worry-free (well - almost so) life, everyone. ole joyful...See Morekittymoonbeam
