I have never been so outraged...(Bonny High School Graduation)

I am usually not one to be 'moved' by news...probably because we become so immune to the nightly violence and drama, but this one has got my panties in a bunch, and I can't believe that this superintendent did this to this boy. The video is to the right, and there's shots of what actually took place.

The administrators should be ashamed of themselves for taking this moment away from this boy.

As for the rest of what went on, it's typical graduation stuff, and 'tradition' according to the students (regardless of some piece of paper that says "no beach balls"). I can't believe the administration couldn't just let the celebration BE a celebration, and insist so adamantly that it be a "somber" occasion that it was ruined for these kids.

Some folks live their lives in a constant struggle for power and control. When they don't get what they want they have a temper tantrum... poor Suzanne. Power seems to elude her... so does the respect of her Graduates. It's sad for everyone around her. And for her as well.

"When you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

This reminds me of a story that was passed around a few years ago. Snopes lists it as partly true, a few things are a bit off... but it is based on fact.

More than one way to have a benediction at at college graduation ...

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium.

With their rich maroon gowns flowing .... and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.

Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT pray during the commencements----not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine ... until the final speech received a standing ovation.

A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly sneezed!

The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, "God bless youÂeach and every one of you!Â And he walked off stageÂ

The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke GodÂs blessing on their future with or without the courtÂs approval.

Wow, MM! That is outrageous! IMO, that superintendent should be disciplined. Some people just have small minds and no sense of humor, for one thing.

My son graduated last year. Like the above poster, I did it the weekend after graduation. I used disposable plates, napkins, cups in the school colors and balloons to decorate. We had a crowd; well over 100 people. I did the picture collages and a video that played on a laptop going through his birth to graduation pictures and videos all set to music. It was wonderful. I also had some of his school work and artwork from the elementary grades, some of it was so funny! Lots of sports memorobilia too as he is an athlete. I made a lot of food! My son's requests were his favorite chicken pasta salad and a chocolate fountain; both were big hits. Since it was his party I wanted to include him in the menu too. We did not serve any alcohol but we did order a Root Beer keg from the liquor store. We put some prefilled cups with ice cream in a cooler so people could make floats but I think most just drank the Root Beer. We went through a 16 gallon keg in a little over 3 hours. It was outside on the deck because it gets sticky. Guest really loved it and I got a lot of good comments. I set up a volleyball net in the back yard. After the official hours of the party, the teenage guests stayed and played some very competitive volleyball for a couple hours and I served them leftover sandwiches, salads, fruit and punch. I suggest you designate someone with your camera to get pictures of your DD with guests, grandparents, aunts, uncles, special friends, etc... you'll be much too busy and you'll appreciate having the pictures later. Have fun and find someone to help you so you can take some time out of hostessing to enjoy your guests. Maryp

My son is graduating too this year. We'll probably give him money. We got our older son a St. Michael medal (his name is Michael) and nice gold chain + some money. Middle son said he didn't want the medal, so will just give him a bit more $$. Personally, I dislike gift cards - unless they're for a specific purpose to a store that they already know they want to shop at. My kids have gotten countless gift cards over the years from relatives to stores they don't really shop at. So, they "save" them thinking they'll find something they need at some point. I'm not talking about handing the kid a small fortune, but at some point they need to learn to control themselves with more than $100 bucks in the bank. My son recently started working steadily and we opened him a bank account with an ATM card. He'll use this account in college, and I'm assuming will deposit all his gift money into it. Maybe we'll talk about creating a savings account too, so he knows he's got the money over there, but isn't tempted every time he goes to the ATM!

Let me see, this graduation is in a football stadium? How many will this stadium hold, and how many students are in the graduating class? I don't do math this early in the morning- will you let us know how many guests each graduate 'should' be able to invite? Yes, in venues with limited seating I can understand a restriction on tickets. But, cripes, this is a stadium. I'm sure there's a capacity limit for games- is graduation no less important than a sporting event? I think that's your ace in the hole. Sue36 is right, if the rule is applied uniformly, there is no discrimination- but that's a federal (?) test. Applying the fish test (does it smell? probably fishy...) makes one wonder if the rule, arbitrary as it is (assuming the stadium capacity would allow more guests per graduate) has an intended consequence of keeping the number of minority attendees in check. In our town, the Mexican families are large, they are loud, they cheer wildly and wave banners at the graduations. Whereas our kids are expected to graduate, and it's just a rite of passage, it is a HUGE deal to them and their families. Power to them- this is education and certainly cause for celebration. He thinks chairs are tacky? Maybe he thinks their exuberance is tacky as well. I don't think you're off the mark at all.

I gave both of my kids a grad party when they graduated from HS. Both were essentially the same. Sunday afternoon around 2 pm. Lots (LOTS) of munchies - chips, dips, veggies, cookies, brownies, cheese, that sort of thing. No activities were planned. I invited my close friends, and they invited their friends. I served wine for the adults, cokes for the kids. Everyone sat around munching & schmoozing and a good time was had by all. Simple. For gifts, I recommend things that have to do with the college they will be going to (for those who are going). T-shirt, sweat shirt, rug for dorm room, blanket, etc, with college logo. If they are going away to another city, books with information on that city. Mostly my kids got checks for gifts, but a few people gave them what I just named above and they liked those gifts a lot.

There's a lot of talk about "it's not about the kiss" and about a signed agreement (IMO- "guidelines" that should never be enforced unless in extreme cases of disrespect), and about his cords (which apparently were not academic, but he did not display them outside the robe...he played by the rules in that regard)...
I think this is just so awful. There are no do-overs...this is ruined for life.

Perhaps come payday for Suzanne, someone should hang on to her paycheck for a while. When she complaines she earned it... well maybe she did... but then again...
