Killing grass beneath raised bed

Question for those who know about killing grass beneath my new raised bed. My husband and I dug out a small trench for a new flower bed (oval) shape in the back yard last weekend. We left the grass except around the perimeter where we are setting the landscape stones.

Tonight my husband tells me he does not think my idea of laying newspaper on top of the grass and then adding dirt on top of that will kill the grass roots. We will not be planting perennials in this bed until next spring. I feel that come next April/March the grass roots should turn pretty easily when I get in there with my shovel to start planting.

I was definitely recieving the "you're confused" look from my husband. Am I? I thought this was a good plan until tonight.

Thanks.

Kate
