white pine seedling

I was just given a white pine seedling - they tell me it is 1 year old, about 2 feet tall. HAPPY EARTH DAY!

I have a great place to plant it, but I have a couple of questions

There are the roots, and then a little way up there are 3 or 4 short "sticks" growing upwards, then a little farther up the greenery starts. Do I put the upward growing things underground or just the roots.

What do I do with it in the winter - just leave it and hope? I am a wintersower, so leap of faith is my way of gardening. Thanks
