The fig you had trouble with was repotted while it was in leaf, which is always going to be stressful. There is no way to determine how you went about repotting the avocodo w/o you telling us, so no one can determine what might have gone wrong. Did you keep the roots wet while you worked? cut pie-shaped wedges out of the root mass? fertilize right after the repot? remove a very large fraction of the roots? Sometimes, it's necessary to remove some of the foliage when trees are in leaf if you suspect the roots remaining after the repot might be inadequate in supplying the canopy with the water it needs. Resist the urge to water as soon as you see the top of the soil drying out. There is little water loss from the soil because of the condition of the plant and the glazed container, so I seriously doubt if you'd need to water more than weekly until growth resumes. Whether or not the plant responds depends on how well it was growing before the work. It looks like it was doing well, so it should be OK. I can tell you though, that you need to change something in your methodology to prevent this type of reaction in your plants. A little wilting and pouting is to be expected for a week or two, but not to the degree you're seeing with the avocado. Al

I find with the griity mix you can water as much as you like, I don't think its possible to over water the mix since it drains so well and holds little water. I usually water every second or third day during the winter inside and just about everyday in the hot summer sun outside but I also substituted aquarium soil for turface in my mix so it could be a little different for you. I also find that I need to fertilize more since I water so often.

1/16" is too fine for the entire mix. Al's recommendation is to use the insect screen or 1/16" mesh for the Turface only, to keep the fines to a low percentage of the mix, and to minimize the money spent on Turface. According to Al, and my experience concurs, the PWT can't happen with particles 1/10th" and larger. I've had PWT in fresh gritty mix when my minimum screen was #10 / 2mm / .0787 inch - bigger mesh than window screen. That happened when I decided to pass the calcined DE reject from the #8 screening, through the smaller #10 Turface screen, and include half of it in the calcined DE portion of the mix. This was in addition to the screened Turface portion. In other words, my proportion of material finer than 1/10" was too high, filled in the spaces between the larger particles, enough to support a perched water table. Not sure why you would water twice daily, but seems to me that if the mix has been screened at 1/16", the bottom of the pot is likely saturated, not drying out, preventing air from circulating from below. Of course you can!! You can plant any containerized plant grown in any sort of container soil into the ground. However, if the soil structure is significantly dissimilar - which it will be - it's best to remove as much of the container soil as possible from the rootball before planting.
