Confused about nutrients deficiency...

Hello everyone,

I am an experienced gardener, but a novice with roses. I planted several rose shrubs last year. After some fighting with black spots, insects, etc. I decided to stick with Double Knockout roses and a couple of other Floribundas.

KO were terrific performers for me and virtually trouble free.

This year, I noticed that the leaves of my roses are pale. No prominent veining or spots, just overall coloration is not as bold as usual. I am pretty familiar with the signs of deficiency for green leaf plants, but the roses have bronze/red leaves and it is hard to say if it is a lack of Nitrogen, chlorosis or something else.

Could you help me with this?

Maybe the leaves just haven't matured yet. Are you in zone 5?

Overall pale green could be nitrogen deficiency, but not if you've applied fast nitrogen in the past month.

I am in 6b/7a, MD. I applied Rose-tone and a little alfalfa meal about a month ago. Alfalfa contains Nitrogen of course, but I do not think it is a fast one. Besides, that was a very moderate application.

Honestly, I do not remember young leaves last year, but these do not look young-pale, they rather look slightly anemic to me.

It's definitely a mutation in that stem, and it is pretty, but it could not be propagated separately from the parent plant as, producing no green leaves, it has no chlorophyll and is relying on that produced by the regular shoots to survive. Still, as long as the other shoots grow green leaves and photosynthesize, it should continue to grow, I had a similar mutation in a potted vinca vine "Wojo's Jem" where one stem sprouted and grew in completely white. It grew very slowly but survived for a few months as the plant still had green leaves to rely on. Eventually, it died out though.

The seeds didn't come with instructions really. General instructions, soak for 24 hours, plant, water. Then instructed to search on Google. Humidity isn't a problem, I'm in Maine it's always humid. We're in the middle of a mild blizzard and the humidity is 96%. I can take a vicks vaporizer and create a rain forest including rain in any room. Problem is, I don't know how much humidity is best. I have 60 watt bulbs over the planted seeds right now. The temp is 71 F. Again, the problem is I don't know how much. The dirt part has me completely lost. From what I've read online it says to use 30 sand and the rest planting soil, but the plant I purchased which is around 4" to 6" tall looks like it's in miracle grow. Which is what got me to thinking about nutrients. I can't find a good blog or anything on raising these kinds of plants.

Mike, I was composing my response as you were posting yours :-)) Raised bed gardening is far more like inground gardening than it is to containers :-) Most of the aeration/drainage issues common to container gardening do not apply. That's why you can get away with using regular ole garden soil in a raised bed, together with whatever OM is at hand......not something that would produce similarly successful results in a container situation :-) Ergo, one would want to fertilize a raised bed planting similar to how one would an inground planting bed. With the OM the OP has already got incorporated, I believe the necessary nutrients are very likely present, with the exception of the N for the reasons I gave. Regardless, the 8-4-4 forumlation most likely has a variety of micros included - most do. It is only the primary nutrients that are disclosed on the NPK ratio....the others should be listed elsewhere on the packaging.

mosaic virus on squash or just nutrient deficiency?

Thanks Dan. I kept my fingers crossed and refrained from pulling it up. Here are some more recent photos from yesterday. Squash is on the left, zucchini on the right. I've added a little compost, some coffee grounds, chopped banana peels, and epsom salt around the base of both. Just trying to cover all the bases for possible nutrient deficiencies. Any other suggestions for things to add? I've noticed the newer leaves aren't yellowing yet, plus the rain has held off lately so I'm hoping they're in the clear for now. Also noticed some little yellow baby squashes starting to grow, so that's a good sign. I'm still confused as to why both of my squash plants would be affected but neither of the zucchinis, given that they're sharing the same soil.

Are these new leaves? New leaves on Knock Out can be red in color until they mature in sunlight as michaelg said.

Rose Tone has some fast nitrogen, so it's probably not that, not if you applied a cupful. However, you could scatter 1 TB of plain Turf Builder or MirAcid around a couple of them, water, and see if they do better than the other roses.

Deficiencies of iron, Mg, Mn, etc. don't produce an even overall paling.
