Flowering plum with fruit?

I've looked at tons of pictures and have searched a few tree ID websites, but I just can't pin down what this tree is. It seems to resemble a flowering plum or flowering almond, but certain characteristics throw things off. It blooms with white flowers with pink blushing in spring all over the branches, and some places along the trunk. The branches are pretty gnarly and the bark is rough/bumpy. The leaves are long and thin, in clusters, with a deep maroon color all year round. It sets tons of small green fruits with a fuzzy skin like a peach. The flesh stays hard, never softens. The pit looks like a freestone peach. The nut inside is rather flat. It seems to have survived my rough, uneducated attempts at pruning. Is this possibly a fruit or nut tree that just needs a pollinator?

Snapfish requires registration to see anything more than the initial photo......and that's rather small :-) But it sure looks like a flowering purpleleaf plum. While considered an ornamental, these often do produce a small fruit much like you describe.

Hi! I have an Italian Plum and it has taken seven years to finally have an excellent crop and that will be this summer. I am so looking forward to it. Last year I only got 24 plums. The tree has just gone through 'June Drop' and it is still loaded with a lot of plums; too many to count :) European Plums seem to take time to set fruit. I have a total of five European plums on purpose. Cross pollination always helps. Even though the Italian plum is 'self pollinating', extra pollen never seems to hurt. Mrs. G PS my 'Bavay' is too young to set fruit, but I really look forward to that delicious green plum.

Scott has mastered the origin of plum varieties better than I, but Methely is considered a J. plum and Toka a hardier hybrid. Methely is hardier than any other red-fleshed J. plum that I've grown from my observations of cold related cambium damage. The more commonly grown J. plum in Z 5 NY is Shiro. Most Euro plums are somewhat hardier- also flower later. Peach buds have over a 5 degree differential of hardiness between flower and vegetative buds. One year my orchard got down to -22 and leaves were fine but not flowers. Same with areas not quite as cold as I believe -19 pretty much kills off flowers. Areas that got much below -25 lost their peach trees. As I recall the same thing held true for plums that year.

Especially if you live near Rockport TX on the coast - eating the ones grown wild here would be particularly nasty! Umm the reason it would be nasty is that my little girl Hattie (8) and I love to drive around, pick them and eat em! We would be really upset if you chose plums that were bright red and just a tad soft to the touch! I just dug holes to plant 50 of them for her 9th birthday coming up next month. Anyone know what soil I should add- What we have is a bit sandy.
