Wine Grape, soil augmentation(s)

I live in North Texas, and I've been growing grapes for about 9 years. I have 4 'parent' vines in my back yard, and about a dozen cuttings of varying years, in the 'back' 1/2 acre. I grow the WRONG grapes for this area, attempting a Pinot Noir and a Pinot Grigio.

New more adept additions this year will be the Spanish Tempranillo and the Eastern European Rkatsiteli.

I have ALWAYS augmented my black sandy loam, with a white and or flint pea-gravel, and then some sand from the Red River. If you want a good 'wine' grape, it has to struggle...fertilizers, nutrient rich composts, or castings will wreck a good vine for years.

What if any 'successes' have you guys had or would recommend?

*I've been told you can taste the 'flint' additives, especially in white wines.
