Ornamental tree for near patio (instead of japanese lilac)?
Comments (20)To revert to your original post, if you want another spring-flowering, small tree of a different color - redbud, crabapple (some are white flowered), Flowering cherry, etc. - would be a good substitute. Fringe tree is another one, but IS white flowering, and is late to leaf out. Hawthorns (some are native and some European or hybrids) do have white flowers for the most part - some have red - but the red fruits are interesting, and some have good fall foliage - being members of the rose family, they can get common rose family diseases, including fire blight, and they do have thorns. If you want a summer flowering tree, then there are possibly one of the hardier crape myrtles, stewartias (possibly not hardy), franklinias, and a few others - some of which will also have white flowers. You might also be able to grow and limb up a Peegee hydrangea, although the weight of the blooms will bow down the branches to a degree. If you can find one, a sourwood is summer-flowering, whitish and come in July-Oct., with good fall foliage. Virginia Witch hazel flowers in the fall, with yellow flowers - there are hybrids with European varieties, which might be hardy for you, in orange to red colors, that flower in early spring. Fall foliage is yellow....See MorePruning fig tree for small space near house?
Comments (2)It seems like you should have enough room to plant a fig tree in this space. Fig trees can be pruned to maintain a small size. The best location for a fig for us in the Northeast is against a wall facing south, where it's protected from cold wind and gets enough sun....See MoreLooking for tree for small area near house
Comments (8)The pear would have been too big unless this is a large, multistory house - these are used as street trees etc. Western service-berry might work for you, otherwise maybe a small-growing, regionally adapted flowering crabapple cultivar - local independent outlets may have suitable candidates on display at this time, or whenever the peak spring season is there. I just bought this one, it is one of the best crabs on the market - even has flowers that smell sweet (many Rose Family trees do not). As you can see from the description (below) it is slow-, upright- and small-growing (if 18' in 20 years would be too big for you then you are looking for a shrub instead of a tree). http://www.usna.usda.gov/Newintro/adirond1.html...See MoreTree Suggestions Wanted: Small Flowering Near House
Comments (35)I'll try to explain, with apologies to the OP. In your first post you referred to S. reticulata flower smell as "fishy odor." In your last posting you referenced the fragrance as "powerful but not lovable." The range between these two reference points covers a wide swath of the olfactory spectrum. IMO, the fragrance of S. reticulata is certainly not "lovable" like common lilac, but also not offensive as "fishy odor." Does that make sense? I think this is a case where only the nose knows what it likes or dislikes. If a "lovable" fragrance is what the OP is after, then this might not be the right tree. If, on the other hand, they are looking for an ornamental but tough small tree, then this one might be just right....See Morerengirl
