Cheap oldies but goodies at local Walmart today

I remember a post from last year about someone finding a nice red/white disease free striped rose at Walmart last year, and last summer I picked up a couple of J&P almost killed $3 rejects which rewarded me (Lemon Zest and Grand Prize, on year 2 now!)

I am going to SP a faltering body bag Mr. Lincoln, and I am fed up with my awkwardly growing, 1 cane Valencia (also body bag). (I saw a whole bed of Valencia at the Portland OR test gardens and it was smallish and awkward there too)

So Walmart today had $8 in pot and budding hybrid teas and floribundas - I guess these are cheap potted up bare roots. You can see where the main canes had been hack-pruned at some point - by machinery? Nevertheless, the bushes are quite clean and growing vigorously, and look as good as any I've paid $25 for at a nursery, so I picked up a new Mr. Lincoln, a Tiffany, and I am going to try Chicago Peace for the first time. Others I saw: Pascali, Arizona, Oregold, Heirloom, Peace and others I can't remember. So if you live in VA/DC/MD you might want to check it out if you are in the market for a classic - these look fresh off the truck!

Glad you brought this up. I bought a bareroot at walmart last year. Gave about 4 blooms over summer(I live in NJ). It survived the frost and leaves are sprouting this year. But there seems to be a break in leaf growth. No buds either. Wonder how these cheapies from Walmart do over long periods. Are Home-Depot bareroots any better? They even had a brand name PARAMOUNT roses on the bag.Any experience with J&P roses. Their catalog online is realy savvy and they seem so hyped up. Do they live up to the hype?

Out here in La La Land, we can probably get away with a lot, but it is my understanding that,
in areas with a real winter, virused roses are more or less going to be annuals.
Or pretty close to it, anyhow.

And you can more or less count on all of these "cheapie" budded roses being virused.

So it's sort of a case of YMMV.
Even here in La La Land, I don't think roses like these are worth the cost in terms of labor, and
Planting materials.

I forgot POINT OF VIEW (Sanford Roberts 92), really a wonderful, bright red. I like SWAN POND, a white by Helen (?) Dougherty (1981). Also her (or Everett's ?) INDIAN RIPPLE (1997). They were NOT EA plants! They were in 4" square pots and they were lush and full and gorgeous! They totally covered their little bamboo loops and were in prime condition. The soil was moist but well drained and no bird poop on them! Truthfully I picked one up and examined it closely but didn"t make it a point to remember the suppliers name. I was so crushed they were all KQ I couldn't get past that. I'll go back Monday and get the details. This was the Walmart in Dexter, Missouri BTW. They were just putting their stuff out and only had 1/4 of their total area stocked. Maybe I'll go back and find a dozen curtsii! I didn't even pay any attention to their price ( I have KQ ) but I bet they're CHEAP! If they don't turn up for yall locally I will be happy to buy and ship. I was almost tempted to get one for myself.

I can say with great certitude that the "3Rs" ~ Round, Red and Reliable are in practically every SASE request I've handled. Popularity of any one variety is always influenced by online discussion, currently Marglobe, Heinz 1437, Homestead, and Phenomenal are big faves with Bonny Best, Fabulous, Super Sioux, Celebrity and Heatwave requested a little less frequently. I've got only five packs of Fabulous left so they'll likely be gone my Tuesday if not tomorrow. (God bless the good folks who donate their tomatoes because they keep the supply line going strong!) It's been a busy month with nearly three thousand packs already gone and there's still another week to go. This weekend exhausted at least ten types from the list but I put in another dozen--most of them are 3Rs which are the backbone of the list; they are the usual introduction to growing tomatoes in the home garden for any beginner and they are among the beloved favorites of the most experienced tomato aficionados. Everybody wants some and everybody loves some. Sometimes it's heritage or sometimes it's family history that influences selections, but oftentimes it's reliability. I'm doing a donation to a food bank in the deep south next month; their clients need reliability so disease resistance is a huge factor in selection--these people do not have the money to purchase "curatives". I'll review Tuskegee's documentation which will guide me in selections; I think it's gonna be mostly 3Rs. Bottom line is that the economy tanked, for most people reliability means less expense. Celebrity, Big Boy, Early Girl, Big Beef, etc are going to maintain if not increase their popularity.

At my local store, they had the dark red Bing and white Ranier cherries for $1.99 a pound. I got bags of both! If you want to pit them, here's an easy way: You need a plastic drinking straw, a long-neck (beer) bottle and some patience. Set the bottle in front of you, center a cherry on top, then the straw, and press down hard. The pit will be in the bottle and your cherry will be hollow.

Last May I bought my first 2 bare root roses from Walmart.
For $3.00 I bought Christopher Marlowe, a David Austin rose, which is about 3 feet tall and bushy right now developing the most fragrant and gorgeous blooms! (J&P sells them)
The other bare root rose bush I bought was a Big Red rose bush with the most perfect large red flowers you have ever seen.
I paid all of $4.00 for Big Red.
I still have both of them now. They are both developing buds.
I went to a Nursery and fell in love with a J&P rose bush called "Rainbow Sorbet" last week. I paid $20.00 for that one. Gorgeous rose! Non stop blooms!
My son just ordered Pope John Paul II tonight for mom's day, but I won't receive it til the 20th. I had to have that rose bush, they had PJP II also at the nursery, but I didn't want to spend that much on the 2 of them at that time. The nursery is now sold out of all of their J&P roses.
I didn't buy a rose from Walmart this year only because I didn't really like the looks of them.
Home Depo had Chicago Peace, a yellow climber, for $6.95, but I went with a rose in a pot called Climbing Westerland rose, apricot-orange color, hoping it would grow in faster this summer.
The key I found is to soak the bare root plants in a bucket of water for an hour B4 you plant them.
I think buying the roses in the pots is still a wise move and if it costs a little more, it's worth it.
The new PJPII I will receive later this month will be bareroot, and I am soaking it good.
The old fashioned big red rose bush I bought at Walmart is my absolute favorite. Reminds me of the roses I remember when I was a little girl.
