What happens if you spray a rugosa?

I don't usually spray anything (which means insects and/or disease win some of the time), but this spring we were overwhelmed by tent caterpillars and gypsy moth caterpillars. I could not keep up with them. More than once I was late for work because I was picking them off the bushes, and even when I tore myself away to get in the car I could see I was leaving behind scores of munching invaders.

So I went to the farm store and asked what to use on my roses. Came home and sprayed. Wish I had done it sooner with William Baffin, who was seriously damaged pre-spray. Also sprayed a bunch of others, including three rugosas.

Later, I remembered that one isn't supposed to spray rugosas. I see quite a few black-spotted yellow leaves on one of themunusual for that rose. Is this the result of spraying?

I honestly don't know what would have happened to them if I hadn't sprayed. Things had reached the point where even if I had all day to pick the caterpillars off, they would have won by sheer numbers.
