Southern Magnolia - Leave Loss

Hi everyone,

In November 2008 I had a house built and the builder put in a rather tall Southern Magnolia. It's taller than wide. In spring of 2009 we had a lot of heavy winds in the spring, drought and really hot sun in the summer so my poor magnolia tree looks like poo.

I would like to help encourage to grow more leaves and bush out.

This year I cut off it's lower branches, the ones near the ground. Hammered in some fertilizer spikes, re-mulched it and have watered it once a week.

Is there anything else I can do to help this guy out?
