Please share Jigs to hold pallet planks to cut with a chainsaw

Please share Jigs to hold pallet planks to cut with a chainsaw (electric). I use the wood to start fires only and might have a 4Ã¢ÂÂX 4Ã¢ÂÂ cube of planks. I used my band saw to cut the planks the last 2 seasons after finding the source of wood. The band saw is dusty and time consuming for the small amount used when IÃ¢ÂÂm not burning 24/7. With the band saw or chainsaw I know nails are a concern.

I had a bunch of 6" wide fencing to cut up a few years ago. I just stacked about 16-18" of boards together with a pair of furniture clamps. (pipe type)

I use a similar method with small limbs stacked 3-4Ã¯Â¿Â½ high between post when I bring in 3-6" oak wood (from tree trimming off the curbs). Not being concerned with nails, this is a time saver and good heat/exercise vs larger logs. On a real cold night I can fit in 10-12" All-Nighter +! Feeding the fire before the next morning is history vs coals to continue with the next day. Holiday fires only are not close if I can keep finding reasonable wood!!!

We get free pallets at a local plumbing supply company. These are all untreated hardwood pallets. Pallets can be used as is and we have done that many times for compost bins. I now have a 5 bin system and will post a link to a pic. Compost bins made this way will last for many years. Nothing fancy, they are just nailed together. We regard pallets as free wood and my DH now cuts the ends off to obtain usable pieces. Much easier than pulling nails which he used to do. He's made many things from them altho sometimes uses them for kindling if I don't come up with a woodworking idea soon enough. Many years ago I watched a TV show where a guy made many nice pieces of furniture from pallets. He ran them thru a planer first. He explained that there were many different exotic woods in pallets. My habit is not to use light equipment (10" Remington Pole Saw and 12" McCullough Chainsaw) over 50-100' with a light extension cords. I have a 1hp Air Compressor and 1 hp Log Splitter that I will not use over 50' on 12-3 cords (99.9 % w/o a cord). There has to be a Pole Saw longer lighter and naturally smaller (4"bar) than the Remington 8 - 10", What??. The saw is a killer at the 9' extension if you are not almost under the limbs. I have the 16' Sears Manual Pruner Saw that's a killer cutting over 1-2" limps. My Rope Saw is even a killer. My Pruning Issue: I have decided to contact the City and get a clarification on who is responsible for trimming limbs away from wires coming between houses from reader easement to front easement street lights. In 07 they came out with bucket trucks but no needed tools and told me they were not tree trimmers. I repeated my email and pics and a 2nd crew came with the same statement and attitude but had tools and got the job done. I promised to try and keep the small limbs away but that has gotten too high and hard. I sent my efforts this year that clears the wires 4' away to the front easement but I feel my efforts between the houses are theirs. With No Reply Yet! The winter weather and dead trees will take poles and wires down as one did 4-5 houses away in 07 that caused a fire and power outage about 12 hrs.

Please give you opinion on that Nasty Fire Box at the top before the pipe connects. It is nasty looking but all Soot in my opinion. Usually I sweep it off with a fan on top pulling Etc up.Getting in there is not fun due to my over-head tubes and “Young Body”. Sweeping with a broom has always cleaned the pipe and box. I did collect Etc from cleaning once years ago and tried to burn or ignite with no luck (thinking it was creosote). I’ll try to post a pic and would appreciate on what the collected material was. Thinking about it, most of the mess came off stainless I added as an extension due to my neighbor complaining of smoke coming down vs drafting up. The extension did not change the draft. Some winter days I noticed smoke would drift down. The mess was the build-up on the single stainless extension. Soot in a different form maybe??? I have not seen this mess since the extension was removed or smoke at ground level. I feel the single stainless sheet was colder above the insulated pipe and attracted the soot or etc. I was told I might have th crack a window to get a good draw with the insulated filled pipe. I added ducks in the hearth that were inside the Double faced fireplace with the doors closed. The steel back on one side cancel one 4” duck. My focus is to keep ash out of the duct. Plus I can see in it and vacuum if needed. Too much Stuff and excuse the order!

There fore seals should have reduced loading also due to binding." After splitting wood with a splitting maul since the late 70s my body had all it could take of the shock bt late 90s. As I went to smaller wood 2 friends went to larger commercial grade saws and cut there larger wood into 6-8" slices and slices into 6-8" blocks. They had slabs or space for blocks vs my racks for sticks. A friend called and ask if he could give me a splitter that he was using but had not finished. That was like a dream and I got busy finishing it 12-24" dia wood vs his 8-10" he used it for. I remember you played around in the past with an older Lincoln stick welder ? Do u still us stick or have you upgraded to a Mig / Tig Unit . In any event you may wish to add another section of plate on the opposite side of the frame to further tighten up the stroke of the Ram under load . I also grease the (Red) painted frame area to reduce frictional drag liberally with moly grease. Other than that all appears correct within your guide addition . I am still using my 180 Amp Lincoln with no plans to change at this stage. Winding Down and clearing out old out dated projects that I saved for retirement projects. I saved and stock piled too much related to Computers, Small Engines and Metalworking. 99 Percent of all the saved materials are gone(donated and salvaged if not used. I know what you mean about improving the Log Splitter's beam. Freon scratch I would have I Beam with more brass involved. At the point I received the splitter there was no form of a guide which told me a lot. I added what a few mods due to splitting wood, easier handling and storage. I'm Done! LOL! I have to get to the Retirement and Fun phase after working since 1960. Hey has the foaming and issue resolved itself within the Oil Reservior that you initially questioned along with what you felt was excessive noise during operation ? .... I c/n remember a foaming issue vs leaking seals. The leaks started after about 2 yrs of "Real" use. When we got creative with 24 - 30"+ dia wood that was not clean grain splitting due to limbs and Etc).. It repeated leaking after one year 2nd use test from the 1st repair 200.00 (Back to Back) "Ouch" ! I added a quart hydraulic filter on the low side (from the repair shop). The Bells went off to cut clean 24-30" wood shorter (12") and push "Straight Only". We or I have not had a problem since because 12 - 16" Dia Is My Limit Clean. My 14" Mc Electric saw cuts any unclean wood into blocks. I do not run the splitter "Period" W/O Ear Muffs due to the pump vs I HP Electric Motor Again, Who taught you how to smoke what in what? Followup:

The pallet plank cutting setup vs a jig was not a challenge after sleeping on the matter. My Chop Saw with a bad carbide blade was the solution (incase I hit a nail). I have used the saw purchased for cutting metal, @ 3500 rpm w/o any problems cutting wood on framing jobs. Too cheap and late in life to want a Miter Saw after using a Radial Arm Saw for years to cut angles, framing and general woodworking.

The process went so fast that I d/n take the chance of cutting multiple boards (due to so many nails). Except, a few times when I had boards to split w/o any nails period. At my source I am able to get all planks from pallets vs assembled pallets. It will be interesting to see if any wood is in the free firewood area now vs my 7/2010 load (with about half gone). I needed that break (vs the dusty band saw) and should have all the starter wood cut for this winter +.

I'm building one maybe late 2013 before end year. Working up material now smaller one this be made form beer keg stainless steel about 5 inch inside Keg for jet. No smoke out vent just co2 and steam. You burn small wood twigs people that have a lot use limbs that fall in yard as wood supply the fire burns sideways inside goes top barrel as close 1 inch you 1/4 per size inside pipe. Ashes are so small lite are none wood burns from ends. Draft is high speed so burns creosote as burns. Its not certified home use measurement are important. Flu goes in Box with small rocks the top this box called butt warmer.

I usually use my Husky 460 Rancher for Hardwood Pallets and my Stihl MS260 for softwood which are smaller pallets. Cut up over 40 pallets in less than a hr into 4"x 12" sections for fire starting or a quick fire for spring and fall earlier this summer. Just had my right hip replaced Monday and will be kicking back and relaxing for a few weeks prior to any labourious endeavours lol . Merry Xmas Gang :)

Take It Easy Ewalk! The chainsaws and Sawzall are good choices IMO with assembled pallets with varying wood and known nail locations. My pallet plank's nails were not a huge concern but more than assembled.

My SUV and I were able to get a better load in planks vs pallets. BTW, the past 1993 Explorer Loved Me 15 years. The present 07 4Runner took over 2 yrs ago this Christmas. It's enjoying the minor work vs the utility trailer for major work. The Explorer as the 4Runner is fitted with a truck's shell when I know it will be needed. The totaled Explorer (due to a fried Main Wiring Harness and some heat damage) surprised me with a 3,700.00 value (due to options and good condition @ 116,000 mi. That helped a little in affording the 07 4 Runner (low mi, certified + ext war bumper to bumper) due to wanting a solid frame and read axle for off-road use.

I Have Not Caught A Fish Since! LOL. A lot is due to our North Tx drought and fun projects.

Hey nice load of fire starter wood , even some 2x4 and 2x6 sections for free....good stuff Dude. P.S. I will smoke some white fish this weekend and send some South to Texas lol :)

The 10" Chop Saw carbide blade cuts small round wood 4" "easier" w/o rotating to cut larger just as good as pallet planks compared to a chainsaw. My new task is to cut small wood 12-16" long just to keep a bed of coal w/o tending the fire or wasting wood. At that length or shorter the wood stays in the bed of coals. I hate starting new fires vs using good coals. Cleaning & Rotating is a different story but not bad. I still question the dust from the cuts due to a variety of green/dry/seasoned woods being cut "in a garage" vs outside.

The quick good heat after the "All Nighters" is hard to beat with roller-coaster temps 20s-30s at night and 50s-60s during the day.
